    Del Ray Beach

Hi all The family is meeting in Del Ray Beach for our yearly get together this year. We have a mix of non-divers, snorkelers and avid divers (thats me and my wife). Can anyone recommended a company that they've had good times with? I don't need or want a guide, I just want to dive with my...

    Diving after a broken ankle

Do that and if DAN oks you bring a note from your doctor. Also ask the boat crew to let you put your gear on in the water and lift it out for you. They won't mind.

    Friday the 13th

Sadly I am on kid patrol today...and they're a mite too young to take. I don't have any problem with diving on today though. It would be kinda funny though to get a hockey mask and machette and burst up out of the water at a dive site...

    Cost of liability insurance

This is not 100% correct. If you teach outside the US you are not required to carry liability insurance to renew.

    Need help prioritizing

I bought a video camera...and I hardly ever take it on dives. My digital still camera does pretty good video, and I find I'm a lot more likely to watch a 2 or 3 minute clip of some extra cool stuff than a 20 minute video of my whole dive. I'd say that investing in strobes would be worthwhile if...

    Tipping Instructor

To those of you who would never tip regardless of the service you receive I have a suggestion: Announce this immediately after introducing yourself to the DM/Guide/Instructor on any trip you go on. Here's a sample conversation: Guide: Hi. My name is scubaguy. Welcome aboard. You: Hi, my...

    Why so many casualties?

There just aren't that many dive accidents. I have no idea how it relates to other outdoor activities, but I'm certain there's less scuba injuries than skateboarding, skiing, mountain biking and hiking. I've been working the tropics for 12 years and I hear about a few injuries a year in every...

    Working in Oahu...?

I think enforcement really is only a factor is the BL gets complaints from employees. Same goes with the IC status, the taxman doesn't care who pays, so long as he gets paid. Another reason not to take a job as a IC, YOU pay 15% of your wages, rather than 7.5% (as an employee the company...

How Afraid are you of Sharks?

    Working in Oahu...?

If you are an employee working more than 20 hours a week they are required by law to provide you with some health care option. I've worked for 4 different shops, 2 where I was an independent (one where I worked for less than week, I simply couldn't stand Fritz's lack of personal hygene) and 2...

    Tipping Instructor

One note about tippiing with beer or or booze: Not everyone drinks. Peope who don't drink are sometimes offeneded at being give beer or even fine liquer (I once was shocked when coworker refused a tip of a bottle of Crown Royale....I was SHOCKED. I would've bought the bottle from him..) Just...

    Working in Oahu...?

It's not quite as bad as it's being made out here...I'd say you can expect to earn around $27,000 to $30,000 a year with health benefits. But you'll work 6 days a week for that. If you're willing to live with other folks rent can be reasonable. Check if the shop will allow you to sell photos...

    Lost log book......

I think you need to do 10 laps in the pool! Seriously most places don't even want to see your logbook. Still better safe than sorry; check in advance with the dive operator of your choice. Of the shops that I have worked at tat checked books we really only cared WHEN you were last diving, not...

    Agencies

NWGratefulDiver...that was one of the best comments I've ever seen on this topic before, you delivered factual info in a fair and unbasied manner. As far as distribution of divers, the most common agency is PADI. By a lot. Next is SSI, followed by NAUI. I've seen a few (like less than 1 per...

Wear your good wetsuit in the pool?

I never wear my personal suit or use my personal BC in the pool when I teach. If I must get into an unheated pool (which I assure you is accompanied by much complaining) I wear a shop suit and I always use a shop BC, the pool is just way too rough on the gear.

    Dive clubs in south Florida

So...my family and I are seriously considering leaving paradise and moving to Florida.:D We plan on living somewhere between West Palm Beach and Miami, most likely Boca Raton. At the very same time I'm going to be starting a new career (environmental consulting). I’m pretty much done...
