Diving in Buzios, Ilhabela, Punta del Este

Hi Nami, Thanks for the feedback! Your info validates what I've been finding out about diving in Punta del Este. I spoke to a dive op there, and they also noted that the only kind of dive is one in which you dive with sea lions, in cold water with very low vis. It sound very much like the...

Diving in Buzios, Ilhabela, Punta del Este

Hello, I'm looking for any feedback about diving in these three locations: Buzios, Brazil Ilhabela, Brazil Punta del Este, Uruguay I'm going to be on a cruise ship that stops in all three ports, and I've read that there is good diving there. I'm interested in feedback - are they worth diving...

    Dr. Bill Needs Help

I'm pleased to see this here on SB. The diving community at large will, I'm sure, want to dive in to help, given how much Bill has given to us over the years. Bill, I'm happy to be able to help in some small way. Stay strong! You'll be back in your (legendarily tattered) wetsuit soon. :)

Thanks for keeping us up to date Ken.

Scuba diver goes missing off Catalina Island

I believe this is one of those unverified rumors.

Scuba diver goes missing off Catalina Island

No. I do hunt lobsters (every chance I get, in season) and I have never done it without normal dive equipment. Hi Russ, long time no see! "Vintage" - yeah, I guess they didn't use BCDs back in the day, did they? I don't personally know anyone who dives vintage equipment.

Scuba diver goes missing off Catalina Island

I've been on the Magician several times. They run a first class operation too, and take roll-calls very seriously. I would not want to get the stink-eye from them during roll-call. ;)

Scuba diver goes missing off Catalina Island

^^^ What Ken said! We don't know what happened. We have unconfirmed reports. It's good to talk about how to ensure that no boat ever leaves a diver behind, and that was my purpose for jumping into this thread, because I sure as hell never want that to happen to me, or anyone! But we still...

Scuba diver goes missing off Catalina Island

I haven't mentioned it as my message was pretty long already...but I totally agree with you that the buddy system *should* be another failsafe. Of course that didn't work in the Drifting Dan case, did it? So I see it as just that: a failsafe. Each diver must respond him or herself to their...

Scuba diver goes missing off Catalina Island

So...just to reiterate that we still have no specific information about what happened, and I'm still holding out hope that it's not what is being suggested. (I feel I must preface my comment with that, because I don't want to be accused of taking sides once the true story comes out - and it...

Scuba diver goes missing off Catalina Island

My husband and I have a sailboat, and are preparing to retire in a couple of years and sail around the Pacific. We both have personal EPIRBs. But we have never taken them diving with us off a dive boat, only our own boat. I'm now rethinking that, big-time. But I'm still holding out hope that...

Scuba diver goes missing off Catalina Island

Wow. Just...wow. I learned of Laurel's disappearance right after it happened, but I am just hearing today that the boat moved to another site without her aboard. As always, we need to wait to get confirmation and details, and any speculation about what really happened is just that -...

    TSandM -- Lynne Flaherty

During this holiday season, I have found myself thinking frequently of Lynne. And of her family, dealing with their first holiday season without her. I haven't been diving since right before we lost Lynne, due to a couple of surgeries that sidelined me. I'm about to depart on a trip to the...

    TSandM -- Lynne Flaherty

Heartbroken. I was just chatting with Lynne on Facebook two days ago...she was giving me a pep talk after my shoulder surgery that I had a few days ago, assuring me I'd dive again...I'm so so sorry, there are just no words to convey. Such a loved person, by so many far and wide. All I can...

    Bali Trip Report - Sep/Oct 2014

I got the general Bali/Lompoc one. We were traveling with a non-diving couple, and only spent seven total days out of our 3 weeks there actually diving, so I wanted lots of information about all the other stuff to do. I tend to buy more guidebooks than I need whenever I travel somewhere, as...

    Bali Trip Report - Sep/Oct 2014

Hi GratefulDiver...sorry for the delayed response, New Years festivities and all that. :) Yes, I had a couple of guide books...I downloaded the Periplus guide to my Kindle, but I learned that without the maps (which you couldn't see on the Kindle version, and for some reason were not...

    Bali Trip Report - Sep/Oct 2014

Shasta-man, I hear ya! That's why my husband convinced me to do at least some dives without my camera, just to enjoy the experience and not be so focused on looking for the shot. Of course none of this is a job to me...I'm a total novice, I just do it for fun, and to experience the majesty and...

    Bali Trip Report - Sep/Oct 2014

Totally agree! I do shoot in wide angle (sometimes...unless I'm feelin' the need for a macro dive), and it definitely forces me to consider the whole image, as well as think about my settings. Changing settings underwater was a challenge for me for a long time, until I got really used to this...

    Bali Trip Report - Sep/Oct 2014

You know, you make an EXCELLENT point, which in fact was a topic that came up during our Bali trip! I admit I have found myself falling into the pattern of "find the critter, snap the shot, find the next critter...". My husband doesn't bring a camera. After our first couple of dives in Bali...

    Bali Trip Report - Sep/Oct 2014

LOL! Thanks. :) Yeah, I probably shouldn't have even bothered trying to justify my opinion. If he had a better experience there than I did, I'm happy for him. I had my experience, and I related it as best as I could. And really, I hate to have this thread turn into nothing but a rehashing of...
