    Scuba risk factors

Well, let's see. I'm 63, smoked from 9-39, am heavy for my height according to the "standards" (but still a sinker), have high cholesterol and about four feet of scars both surgical and injury-related. I like to get deep enough for the nitrogen to relieve the arthritis pain in my joints...

    Need for drysuit speciality?

Not really... the savvy shop owner will offer a discount on a dry suit purchase equal to the course cost if you buy from him/her. Ei

Exploding scuba tank kills one - Florida

Burst disks don't have threads. They are small, flat, thin copper disks. They are often sold pre-mounted to the hollow bolt that secures them, hence the possible confusion. Were I to make a bet... here we have a diver who's just getting into caving, and enthusiastic about it. I'd bet the tank...

Emergency swimming ascent 33ft depth limitation?

FWIW, my comfortable limit for a CESA is 100'. I know lots of other old farts who've practiced them from that depth in the not too distant past, too. (the SSI training limit, by the way, is now 40'... don't know about PADI) I've never, ever heard of anyone suffering a shallow water blackout...

    Name that fish?

    3 strikes against the Nassau... It's a Red. E

    Name that fish?

Sometimes grouper are just very ill defined from their color/pattern, and one must fall back to morphology alone. The Nassau grouper has a distinct notch between the forward spines of the dorsal fin, while the red does not. The picture appears to have the smooth profile of the Red... The...

    Air Buddy - My thoughts

Seems to me the learning curve is pretty flat for this one... If my buddy needs air I hand him the reg in my mouth and use the alternate. And... from appearances (the same appearances used to condemn the device) it looks to me like the Air Buddy is far less likely to get fouled with mud or sand...

    Air Buddy - My thoughts

Well, *I'm* not staying away from it because I think it's dangerous. I'm not buying one because I have no need of one. :) And if you want to claim an argument is illogical, (good grief!) to claim the product is "dangerous" because it's emergency equipment and not enough people have adopted it...

    Air Buddy - My thoughts

When I saw this thing at DEMA back in the 90's I thought "Whoa! Now there's a 'Rube Goldberg' solution looking for a problem..." and wrote it off as one of those doodads that'd be a flash in the pan. But it seems it's still around, and as far as I can tell, doing no harm. So the only first hand...

    Air Buddy - My thoughts

Any of y'all ever used one? Or anything like it? Or is your expert evaluation based on your perception of the website, and "it's very different so it must be bad?" I haven't used one either, but just looking at it I can't see anything "most dangerous." Different, yes; dangerous? I'd have to...

    Risks to going Solo

Most scuba deaths occur when the diver is solo, whether intentionally or not. "Diver separated from his buddy" is as much a broken record in Scuba deaths as "pilot continued VFR flight into IFR weather conditions" is in light airplane wrecks. That doesn't mean the divers who are intentionally...

    Risks to going Solo

Why do you feel the need to decide who should be in the water and who shouldn't? How 'bout you being responsible for deciding whether you should be in the water or not, I'll be responsible for me, and we let the heavy set guys be responsible for themselves... :cool2: E

Some thoughts on restructuring SCUBA training ...

    1. From dive one get the students off their knees and striving for good trim & buoyancy control. Do drills mid-water. 2. Teach students to manage their own tank valve underwater. E

    calling out the BP/w-philes

FWIW, over the years I've accumulated three jackets, two backplates, three wings, one harness (Transpac) and two backpacks. I find all of them to be satisfactory for the dives where I use them. Whatever trips your trigger :) E

S.Korean diver dies in warship rescue

I am holding my tongue as best I can. This type of "Monday morning quarterbacking" of the people on the scene risking their lives in horrid conditions just makes me furious! You two have no idea what they're up against. And as for hiring a major salvage company... who, exactly? What "required...

Death at the Blue Hole in Belize

I recommend you don't do it then. -- I don't believe "deep air" is a factor in this mishap. I don't even believe Scuba is a factor in this mishap. And the only reason the poor fellow drowned is because he fell back in and inhaled water before the heart attack finished killing him. E

    Whatever happened with "Drifting Dan?"

I am reminded of "Lurch's Law of Lawsuits" "A Lawsuit is lawyers fighting over a pile of money, steadily depleting the pile. When the pile is gone the lawsuit is over. Who wins is irrelevant." E

    German woman dies diving Cozumel

Great Day in the Mornin'! Y'all are hurtin' my tender little sensitivities here, sniff... (see the tears?) ! Fer cryin' out loud! People should wait until they have good control of their buoyancy before they are divers! Cameras don't cause accidents. E
