    Socotra Diving

Hi Searcaigh: Thanks for the response. I love diving in the Philippines. Also really enjoyed Oman and the Musandam Peninsula in your part of the world! Been in touch with folks on Socotra, and will try to put a trip together there next year. Cheers, Dan

    Socotra Diving

Has anyone been diving off Socotra recently? If so, did you fly in directly from Dubai, through Saana, or some other route? How was the diving and transit? Thanks, Dan

    Diving Borneo At Kota Kinabalu

Thanks for the responses. @bunty99: Kind of what I thought, but thought I would check it out. @Tippytoes12: Love diving the Philippeans, but not this trip. @Manneca: Thought about Mabul, will see if logistics work out.

    Diving Borneo At Kota Kinabalu

We will be in Borneo in early January, and are thinking about diving at Kota Kinabalu. Any thoughts or recommendations? I understand that plankton blooms take place this time of year, so viz may be so/so. But, then again, I am from the a Pacific Northwest.

    Diving Safely as We Age

Interesting about water temperature. Living in the Northwest and diving in BC and Alaska, water temps are 45-55 F. Colder in rivers and lakes. Dry suits, steel tanks, and 36 lbs of weight. Always nice to dive tropical, but temperate diving is my favorite by far!

    Diving Safely as We Age

Don't know if this will help anyone, but I just wrote an article for Pacific Northwest Diver called Diving Safely as We Age. In the Pacific Northwest we have had a number of fatalities involving divers over 50 in the past few months. Got me thinking about my dive protocols and how they have...

Scuba Pro (UWATEC) IR Download Conversion

Not sure what DuboisP is referring to, but the IR dongle and software work fine on Mac's with Intel chips. (C'est vrais, il funcionnais très bien). Janice: thanks for the conversion information. It might be good to include this in the import documentation: I did not see any reference to...

Scuba Pro (UWATEC) IR Download Conversion

Yes, this resolves the IR data transfer issue, but not the data harvesting by Microsoft. Windows 7 and 8.1 now have data mining similar to Windows 10 taking place, thanks to four recent updates: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3068708, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3022345...

Scuba Pro (UWATEC) IR Download Conversion

Hope this will help those of you whose IR download for Galileo Sol, Luna, and SmartTec no longer works. First off, I used both Windows and Mac's, so this solution may not work for a lot of folks. As of this date Windows 10 does not support IR data transfers. So my solution involves transferring...

    Photo software

Your choice of software really depends on what you plan on shooting and doing with your photos and videos. If you get really serious, Photoshop/Bridge/Lightroom is your best bet. Even if you routinely use Lightroom, almost all high end photographers still use Photoshop, as there are adjustments...

How many of you put most of your weights in the front integrated weight pockets?

I dive with Zeagle BCD's, and have never had an issue with weights falling out. None of my friends who dive with Zeagle's have had an issue. Weights are placed in zippered pockets, there is a rip cord style quick release. Where I have seen integrated weights accidentally dumped are BCD's where...

    Housings too fancy?

Boy, I don't know. I have been shooting Nikons in Subal housings with Ikelite strobes for years, and have not had any major issues. Also not sure it is overly complicated or dependent on pricy PC cards. I have a custom remote release bulkhead, but everything else is standard. Also, if I want to...

    Weighting fresh/salt water

We are located in the Pacific Northwest, and mix lake, stream, and salt water diving. While the books indicate you can drop some weight, we keep the same weight in salt and fresh water without any problem. We are dry suit divers. Just returned from taking a group to the northern part of...

Ah, now you have hit the problem. iPhone cases waterproof below 130 feet. GoPro remote wifi waterproof to 10 feet by itself. We have been placing GoPro remote in double seal sandwich bag, down to 20 feet. We will report range when it is videoed with a tape measure. Our tank tests up to 3 feet...
