The great Spare Air / SpareAir topic

Lets do the math. If you have a 2.0 cf spare air (not sure of the sizes but they are small) That's 2.0 cf at one atmosphere. Now lets take that bottle to 99 ft (4 ATM)....now you have 0.5 cf of available air. Thats barely half of a breath at that depth. A 13 cf pony and cheap regulator...

Which state certifies the most divers?

I have heard through a pretty reliable source, that Florida has more uncertified divers than there are certified divers in all of the US. Don't really know how true this is but at almost 20% of my students said they have been diving for years and finally wanted to get the card.

Is 100 dives enough for an instructor?

Popeye, This has gotten old so I'll be the bigger man here and call it quits. This is a forum. I simply don't have the time to explain the intricasies and meaning behind every word I type and your hell bent on assigning hidden meaning and agenda behind my words so I'll make my position as...

Is 100 dives enough for an instructor?

You're right, you can raise them but you have to draw a line somewhere. I never said I was not happy with the quality of my students. To the contrary, 90% or better were outstanding, many going on to fill leadership roles including instructor. I'm simply trying to make the point that saying...

Boat Diving Safety skills, do you know what to do?? Does your instructor or DM know?

I've done an extensive amount of diving from my 23ft trophy in both Puget Sound and Off-shore Florida and done these types of drills. What I have learned is... These are pretty generalized as all boats are different....As soon as you know there is a diver on the surface in need of medical...

Is 100 dives enough for an instructor?

You obviously didn't read my post and inserted what you wanted between the lines...nice try. The fact is...These students I've mentioned met the requirements. The requirements are a minimum standard to be met. Are you telling me that students should get the equivelant of a 100% score or...

Is 100 dives enough for an instructor?

Well I'm glad someone besides me is awake. While I believe there are some poor instructors out there, there are FAR MORE POOR STUDENTS! I lost count of the self proclaimed rocket scientists I've been forced to issue a cert card to just because they met the minimum standards of the course...

Is 100 dives enough for an instructor?

This thread is interesting. I wouldn't say that there are a lot of incompetent instructors but I have witnessed many poorly trained ones. Fatalities are in fact rare. Odds are, your chances are greater by 100 fold of being involved in a fatal traffic accident on your way to the dive site...

Is 100 dives enough for an instructor?

100 dives is only ONE of the requirements and is a minimum. A candidate with the minimum number of dives has many more hurdles to cross before getting his/her card. Regardless of the requirement, it's easy enough to fake your log book. The bottom line is... If an instructor program is done...

    Padi Vs. Naui

They were also the very first public training agency. Their director at the time (Tillman) developed and held the first NAUI ITC. Tillman went on to be NAUI's first president. LA County is a very prestigious agency with a rich history.

    Night dive under full moon?

Full moon dives are incredible. I've done numerous full moon dives when I was stationed in Guam. The water in Guam was crystal clear and made for some of the most spectacular dives on a moon-lit night. Awesome visibility is a must. You want the kind of water where you can still see the...

    Padi Vs. Naui

Yes, it just wasn't clear at the time that you were quoting someone else. Yes, there are many more differences...the 2 I listed are just the most obvious. Other agencies may have brief discussions about rescue (referring to OW level training) but to my knowlege (I could be mistaken) they don't...

    Padi Vs. Naui

True to a point... NAUI requires OW students to be trained in basic rescue techniques and perform an unconscience diver rescue with and without scuba. Also...5 OW dives are required to complete the course.

Professional liability when diving with friends

There's a lot of good points made in this thread but the biggest issue here is whether or not this should even be of concern. I firmly believe the answer is NO. A dive leader is in far more danger of being involved in a traffic accident on his way to the dive site than being party to a diving...

    Opening a dive site/shop...

The best advice I could give is... Don't think of it as opening a dive shop. Just a guess but I'd bet you're passionate about the sport. This passion could cloud your judgement. Treat it as a business and don't become emotionally attached to the idea. You'll know if it's a good idea after...

    Instructor to instructor communication

I've never viewed this as "teaching" your students to do it this way. It has way more to do with class control. In order for an instructor to have positive control over his students, this is the ideal way to begin. By the last cert dive, a student should be able to clear his/her mask no...

Professional liability when diving with friends

Whenever I dive with friends, I am usually viewed, because of my credentials, as the dive leader. I ALWAYS accept this responsibility and consider it an honor. In this role, I am always prepared to lead/rescue/train/guide etc. if the need arises. Being a dive leader is not a part-time...

    Drysuit Recommendations for SAR?

I'm new here but I'll chime in. I lived near Seattle for a few years and served as Vice President of Skagit County Dive Rescue during my stay. SAR diving puts some unique stresses on dry suits. I used a Harveys neoprene dry suit for several reasons... 1. It was cheap for a dry suit...$600...
