Dive World Austin says they do not maintain rental equipment until it fails

I would also add Tom's to that list. I've had only good experiences w/ their rental equipment (although, granted, it's been a long time since I've rented from anywhere in Texas), have trusted them to service my gear, and - like the other two shops mentioned - they've always treated me well.

Question about tipping on SCUBA trips.

I agree completely! I hardly ever get on Scubaboard anymore, just because it eats my time. But your question caught my eye. I always wonder about these things, and rarely think to ask before it's time to be tipping, and then it feels awkward (plus, I may not have brought enough money). I've...

Question about tipping on SCUBA trips.

I was thinking about: maintaining current cpr certification; taking care of and organizing rental equipment; filling and hauling tanks; completing paperwork (especially if there is an incident - any incident); learning enough about the area to answer specific questions; scouting out & planning...

Question about tipping on SCUBA trips.

One more thing to consider: Not only do DMs typically do work "behind the scenes" to help ensure that you have a safe/fun dive, but they also PAY for the honor in the form of liability insurance. That can be pretty costly. I think I get the McDonald's comparison, but the difference is that...

Sunday August 2 - Lake Travis shore dive

A geocache at 2300 meters???? :shocked2: Are sperm whales geocaching now? Shawn, it was nice to finally meet face to face! We had 3 great dives - temp and vis as reported... although, I think it might have been better than 5-6 feet in spots. And John is now certified!

Diver reported missing in 40 Fathom Grotto

I've heard more than a few people lately say that they've had "misunderstandings" like this. At some point in the dive, one person makes assumptions about the other that aren't necessarily true, or it becomes apparent that both (or all three) people aren't following the same protocol. Because...

How do I calc' the per-tank psi on my doubles?

You can also use this to do gas matching before the dive if you are diving with someone who has different size tanks. Once you figure out what volume each diver has, you can calculate turn pressure in your head more easily.

How often do most shops in your area require Nitrox tanks to be O2 cleaned?

My experience has been that the dive shops I have been to in Austin have required tanks to be O2 cleaned every year b/f they will put Nitrox in them... well, at least 3 of them - the fourth, I may have just assumed it (Mack - does Oak Hill require cleaning every year?). I haven't had my tanks...

How often do most shops in your area require Nitrox tanks to be O2 cleaned?

I really like nitrox when I'm on a liveaboard - especially some place like the Flower Gardens - or when I go to Florida, or somewhere else where I'm doing multiple dives a day in the 80-100 range over multiple days. I use it in those situations NOT so that I can decrease my surface interval nor...

How often do most shops in your area require Nitrox tanks to be O2 cleaned?

Speaking for myself, and only myself, I WOULD dive 28% if that's what was in my tank, and if it didn't cost any more than air, and if I didn't have to pay extra to keep my tank/valves O2 clean, etc. But 28%, IMO, doesn't really have much added benefit over air. At 134 feet on 28% (which, yes...

How often do most shops in your area require Nitrox tanks to be O2 cleaned?

I'm soooooo signing off now... I shouldn't have even gone there - so totally hijacked this thread - and the truth is... I don't trust any of 'em anymore. Too many years working with politicians and their minions... not many honest or straight-forward ones among the whole lot. Sigh... I wish...

How often do most shops in your area require Nitrox tanks to be O2 cleaned?

OOOH! Politics!!! Now we can REALLY make fools of ou - oops, I mean, "have an intelligent discussion..." Anyone up for talking about Sarah Palin? Seems like an easy way of refuting my (joking) assertion about females being the more intelligent of the species...

How often do most shops in your area require Nitrox tanks to be O2 cleaned?

OBVIOUSLY a reason why there should be more FEMALE technical divers. Y'all have the brawn; we have the brains... it's a good match. :blinking: (okay, for those of you who don't know me and are getting ready to flame me: I'M JOKING.)

How often do most shops in your area require Nitrox tanks to be O2 cleaned?

Yeah... I just had that conversation (via email) with a friend - who has his own oil-free compressor - today. It's hard to know what to do when you want to take good -excellent - care of your equipment, but don't necessarily feel the need to go "overboard." For example, I have recently...

How often do most shops in your area require Nitrox tanks to be O2 cleaned?

And, he backed away from that statement - or explained what he actually meant - with this statement "My point is if someone has an air test that shows clean air, that only means the air was clean at the time the test was done." Be careful before you go slapping that "L for loser" on your...

How often do most shops in your area require Nitrox tanks to be O2 cleaned?

Yup, he does. Got the card and probably a lot more knowledge than is needed to get the cert. He's pretty anal that way (actually, if anyone DID have tanks that were 100% free of contaminents - even on the outside - it would be Dan...). What he actually watched in a dive shop was not people...

Need ONE stainless steel, 5", all thread bolt...

I'm having to cut one off of a set of double Al80s, and am having a hard time finding a replacement. Does anyone in the Austin area have one I can beg, buy, or steal? Or know where I can find one?
