    ScubaBoard SURGE Central 2024 Philippines

We got home about an hour ago. Everything went well, just took a while. Not sure we’re going to be able to sleep though.

Weighting for tropical diving with SS BP/W

I dive almost the exact same rig and I'm the same height and weight. I don't need any lead at all in salt water with a 2.5mm shorty. When I gain a few extra pounds, or if I'm going to be in exclusively in shallow water, I add a single 2lb weight, just for comfort.

    O2 Analyzer without decimal

I don’t think analyzers are so accurate that anything after the decimal matters. I round off appropriately.

    Ascending/Decending/Buoyancy

Well, I’m on my phone in a car and didn’t notice the forum. But, it’s nice to know the scuba police are real.

    Ascending/Decending/Buoyancy

There are divers that learn to dive in steel tanks and dry suits.

    Training in Roatan

Train locally so you can maximize your actual dive time while traveling.

    Ascending/Decending/Buoyancy

When diving with heavy steel tanks, I have to dump a lot of air to break contact with the surface. Then, immediately start adding back to control the descent. Once those heavy tanks start down, they accelerate faster than AL tanks. With AL tanks, I can just go head down. That’s harder to do...

    Inflator Hose Routing

Understood… this is one area where I disagree with the standard configuration. Regardless of which side the transmitter is on, it still looks like a valve handle, and it’s just a matter of time before someone grabs it. Or, sticking up like that, it gets banked on something. I’m not ready to...

    Inflator Hose Routing

Don’t use the bottom port. Keep the 1st stage vertical. And, get a 6-inch hose on the transmitter.

    Advanced Open Water Disappointment

This is the way... A DM should have an instructor sign-off as having helped with X number of classes. Then, go straight to a 2-day Instructor Evaluation. The whole traveling somewhere to attend a 10-day IDC doesn’t produce the best instructors.

    Troy Springs Conditions

Troy Springs is about to go dark. The river is rising and there’s a layer of tannic water on the surface. We dove today 8/1/23, and the viz underneath the tannic layer was about 40ft. During our dive, there was an underwater landslide that destroyed the viz. Some of that will settle out...

    ScubaBoard SURGE Central 2024 Philippines

We have ours booked and the flight out of LA has already changed. Make sure you have enough layover time that if your flight changes, or is delayed, you can still make your connection. We’re spending the night in LA just to make the trip easier, since we’re coming from the east coast.

In search of custom tail weights for doubles

Years ago, I took a hammer to a 2lb weight and smashed it narrow enough to go In between the tanks. Then I put it inside the lower tank band, with the lower bolt thru it. It worked perfectly and I didn’t have to worry about it coming loose.

    Brownie's Southport Divers loses divers

They do hot drops on deep wrecks in that area. Some wrecks are too deep to tie-in, especially when in the 200ft+ range. It’s the dive team’s responsibility to shoot a bag when leaving the wreck. The boat then follows. If the divers delay shooting a bag, they can drift a long way, leaving the...
