    Scuba in Belize

Lighthouse Reef is #1 for diving, Glovers Reef is #2, IMO. Recent visit to Itza Lodge on Lighthouse went very well. They do instruction (an instructor runs the place, e.g.) Recent article June Undercurrent on Itza and Lighthouse is very detailed.

Trip Report Itza Resort. March 2022

I was at Itza Resort in February. Good diving, great meals from Chef Douglas. We had a group of 7 and had the place to ourselves, with Elvis as our dive guide. A great trip overall.

The fishermen's cooperative restaurant serves lionfish daily: ceviche, mojo de ajo, etc. Recommended and cozy back-street place.

Cuba - Isla de la Juventud in late April/early May questions

Hmm. Some BAD advice here. 1. Travel and diving in Cuba including Juventud are easy. 2. American bank cc's not accepted as US bank will not pay them! (as stated here). 3. US Currency is fine but slight surcharge. I get Canadian but I live next to Canada, I suggest you simply take good ol...

Maria la Gorda Cuba - questions.....

I have dived Maria la Gorda several years ago, and plan to return in a few months. I found it to be good diving on Caribbean scale and Ive been all over those parts. If you get on Undercurrent.org's useful site, see a February 2002 review of the diving and operation at Maria la Gorda. The...

    Diving in Puerto Rico

Oops. I got the shop-to-avoid name wrong. (Old age, forgive me.) It is Paradise.

    Diving in Puerto Rico

In La Parguera, the dive shop to avoid it Parguera Divers, as explained in the Undercurrent article (mentioned above, July 2009) on diving the Parguera wall.

    Diving in Puerto Rico

Yes, a new shop opened up, I heard from friends who were there last year. I suggest you avoid the shop mentioned in Undercurrent 2009 piece, and go with one of the other two. That's all the info I have.

    Diving in Puerto Rico

La Parguera wall, S. (Caribbean) coast of Puerto Rico is considered the best on the island. See July 2009 UNDERCURRENT for a full report on diving there.

    Cuba?

Friends have dived that 1898 battleship sunk in the battle of Santiago de Cuba. It is done as a shore dive. They are history buffs and found it very interesting. (Wrecks are not my interest.) From Jose Marti airport (Havana) I think it is 4-500 miles to Santiago, so most people would fly. You...

    Cuba?

CUBA DIVE and TRAVEL If you go there, you will see "off the record" Americans most places. You will find wonderful people in a beautiful country -- and folks who enjoy a good time, too. You can stay in private homes -- casas particulares -- cheaply. Cuban version of a B&B. Diving is excellent...

    Cuba?

DIVING IN CUBA Recommended: 1. ) Maria la Gorda in the far west. 4 hr drive from Havana. Xlnt diving. Isolated area. 2). Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth). Short hop via air from Havana. Good wall diving. A little far from hotel to the sites. Cuba's #1 dive spot, but I think Maria la...

    Belize/Roatan Questions

Ive been to those areas a number of times...and think combining "5 star" and "good diving" is going to be hard. The fancy hotels of Ambergris Caye provide diving to the nearby barrier reef which is easy but subpar by any Caribbean standard. You can spring for long day trips to the atolls but...

Coiba Island - Know before you go!

It's fantastic diving, and a good operation for the remote location. I think you pinpointed the issue: weather. In the winter-spring, there is almost zero rain, so you had an October Problem. You can, however, get some rough seas and currents occasionally. For experienced divers, I would say...

    Lionfish in the Caribbean

RE Lion fish in pairs near Gitmo... I have not seen anything published on this, but definitely noticed that most of them were in pairs in a niche on the reef wall at San Salvador, Bahamas. Wonder why... are they mated pairs? As for their being in Cuba for years... not too many years. They...

My Experience with Club Med, Columbus Isle, Bahamas...

Not commercially fished, but by local folks with hawaiian slings and spear guns, who of course take the grouper (didnt you eat a lot of it there?). As for lots of grouper to see, Club Med DM's FEED the grouper to attract them to divers! I petted a couple Nassaus that darkened and approached...

My Experience with Club Med, Columbus Isle, Bahamas...

I was there (diving with Riding Rock) in February. I found it rather heavily fished, with especially few food fish. But I was not surprised by the lack of fish population as compared to many Caribbean sites. There are, however, fewer species of fish N. of the Caribbean in the Bahamas, so you...
