I don't know the code for the law,but in every article I have read they have stated that the family is using that law to try and sue. The law was passed in 2009.
Utah law states that geothermic pools are required to have a lifeguard. I'm not sure if I would classify the Crater as a 'pool'. It's more of a Quarry.
I bet the owners of the Crater will defend it in this sense. There is no law stating Quarries need lifeguards.
I was with both at Blue Lake last Saturday. This morning the one who lent the diver the mask told me he was being sued in addition to the instructor who rescued the freediver.
The viz in the crater is rarely better than 4'. A lifeguard would not have been sufficient. He needed a support team or a safety vest like many free divers wear.
I am not sure I would classify the Crater as a 'pool' either. I also recall signing waivers before I was allowed to dive there.
I just posted this article in the lawsuit section. Didn't see this until after I had posted.
The family is also suing the Dive Instructor that loaned him the mask he used as well as the Instructor that dove in and rescued him. They were both finishing up with their classes when this all...
I know this article is about a free diver, but the guy who loaned him the mask was a PADI instructor with his class. The man who rescued him was also a PADI instructor with his AOW class. The family is suing both of them as well as the Crater.

Lost mine during my last rescue scenario for my rescue cert. I thought I clipped it to my wing before I started doing rescue breaths on the victim, but I didn't the viz in the water was less than 2'. We tried to look for it, but it was a goner.
My dive buddy and I both purchased white bio-fin pros and have loved them. We don't have too many dives on them. One thing I have noticed is that my pair of fins have turned a shade of pink after diving in Lake Powell last fall. My dive buddy who did the same dive, his fins are still white. I...
Sand Hollow is awesome, but if I had the choice between The Crater/Blue Lake and Bonne Terre, I'd pick the mine as well. I plan on doing that dive next time I'm in the area.
Check out their website for the latest vis reports Bonneville Seabase - Utah Scuba Diving and Snorkeling Location - Inland Scuba Diving and Snorkeling. If the vis is 7-10' like they say it is then it may be worth diving. The last time I was there I only found the boat because I ran into it.
I was in the same boat as you... I ended up finding a used Oceanic VT Pro with the wireless adapter for $300 on the 'for sale' section of these forums.
You may be able to find a similar deal between SB, ScubaToys and Craigslist.
Many people engage their body's heating mechanism (urinate) when they jump in cold water. If you had to do the other thing, then there is also a technique for doing that as well ;).
I believe The Dive Shop in Bountiful is going up on December 17 & 18. I am going to try and go up on the 18th as well. Not for the Dry Suit class, but I will be diving Dry. I am trying to secure a Motorhome so it won't be so cold before and after the dive.
Some of those who have commented mention a 'properly adjusted' drysuit valve. How does one properly adjust their valves? Mine is wide open and it rarely vents when I surface. Usually I have to do some 'armpit fart' maneuvers to get it to vent.
I can dive any weekend you want. I live in Salem and have been looking for people to dive with more often than my dive buddy wants to, which this year was almost never.
I know that there is a group heading to Blue Lake on Dec 17 & 18. Maybe they will clear up the road enough that it won't be...
I personally have not had any problems from ordering from Scubatoys.com. One of my scouts did have an issue where they purchased a octo from them. Later that day scubatoys called the scout and told him that the octo he ordered was out of stock. They offered him a more expensive octo for the same...
