Death in Cocos from shark attack

I am supposed to get on the Argo (the sister boat) on Sunday. I arrived in San Jose last night. We have had a message from Undersea Hunter. They said the boat (Sea Hunter) is on the way back and will arrive in port today (Friday) in the afternoon. The Okeanos was still out at Cocos and...

Typhoon slams Chuuk, on track to hit Yap harder

The 31 May to 7 June trip has been cancelled. I don't know past then. Trying to sort out my group. Most of us wanted to be on the Osyssey so will probably not go with another operator on these dates. Big sigh as everyone was looking forward to this. My thoughts are with those in Chuuk as...

Anyone have recent experience with Air Pacific Baggage Policy out of LAX?

Thanks for the responses! I've bought the dive pack so have an extra checked bag on all flights round trip. I'm going to keep my carry-on backpack to 7kg but I'm just hoping I can get through with a 'personal item' as well! I had a problem in Fiji before when I was flying to Honiara. It...

Anyone have recent experience with Air Pacific Baggage Policy out of LAX?

I'm going back to the Solomon Islands in a month. I'll be flying LAX- Fiji - Honiara. The last trip was before Air Pacific cut their baggage allowance. I know how to buy the excess baggage 'dive pack' before the trip for my second checked bag. However, the carry on allowance is 1 bag of...

Gear Insurance - Do you invest in this?

Having watched another dive boat catch fire during my last dive trip, I am going to make sure I understand my coverage from travel insurance and homeowners policy before my next trip. All of the dive gear on board was a write-off -- most of it reduced to plastic blobs.

    Opinions on Maldives Liveaboards????

mjh, I didn't combine India with the trip since BA has direct flights from Gatwick to Male. I have spent three weeks in India on a previous (non-diving) holiday. India is great, but think about the logistics of combining with a diving holiday. You'll probably find that direct flights are...

    Trip report – 2w liveaboard Maldives on the Dhinasha – 26 October – 9 November 2010

I was there on a trip from 6-13 Nov. The manta population was decreasing in Hanifaru as the monsoon was ending and they migrate to other areas. We had been told that they had left over the previous 10 days, but after speaking the manta researchers there, our guides learned that some had indeed...

    Opinions on Maldives Liveaboards????

Got back last night after spending 14 days in the Maldives. Our liveaboard package included 27 dives. We did 28 during the trip plus 2 whale shark searching sessions (to snorkel with them) which also count as dives. From what I understand most operators there tend to do 2-3 dives per day. We...

    BBC's "Oceans" series

Apparently it is called 'Wild Pacific' in the US market (hmmm probably an old musical has the US copyright?). Instead of structuring each episode by region, they had a topic and covered that topic across the span of the South Pacific from east to west. I don't recall that there was any...

Insurance for trip to Maldives- Help needed

I'm not a legal expert! I doubt it is 'illegal' to dive without insurance. Many liveaboards will require you to show proof of dive insurance. I've been on ones that can sell you a short DAN policy to those who do not have cover. The bills can mount up and become VERY EXPENSIVE if you are...

What reg's for uk cold water diving?

Another vote for Apeks. I've got Posseidon Xtremes which I like, and are great cold water regs. Servicing isn't as easy and more expensive. Within the next 6-12 months, I'll probably buy another set of regs and I'm looking at the Apeks XTX 200s. But I will do my homework and decide which...

Fiji - 2 weeks alone in December - Where, What, Why? Help Please!

Hi Ernani, I had just over a week on my own in Fiji before I met my group in the Solomon Islands. I wanted to get in some dives and stay in a comfortable place. I didn't want a backpackers, but I didn't want a top-end resort either. In the end Daku fit the bill. They were running a special...

    BBC's "Oceans" series

I saw most of the Oceans episodes when it originally ran on the BBC. I agree that the 'talent' was selected for audience appeal. And it definitely doesn't hit Blue Planet or other BBC great status. Have you seen the BBC series South Pacific that was shown in 2009? It's now on DVD on...

Need advice on Male (Maldives) Hotel

Thanks for your help. I'm looking into all of them and comparing prices and reviews. I don't know where I saw the 'cheaper' Holiday Inn price before, but everything I find now puts them at the same price as Hulhule! Can't wait for my first trip to the Maldives!
