    refilling tanks with a compressor......

This thread is almost 5 years old. But to answer your question, a CO2 tank is not the same as a scuba tank. CO2 is contained in liquid form when in the tank, so the actual pressure is quite low, while the gas density is very high. This is why CO2 fills are normally measured in "pounds"...

    Anyone buy from Divers Supply?

You do realize this thread has been dead for over 2 years.....

    How cold? wetsuit advice

Absolutely. You can never be too warm. There is nothing "macho" about braving cold water. It increases the risks of DCS, it risks hypothermia, and it promotes dehydration. I learned using a 5mm fullsuit and 5mm hooded vest. I THOUGHT I was plenty warm. I started diving dry about 6 months...

    How cold? wetsuit advice

I wouldn't say that 99% of divers are particularly fit, especially not in CA, but regardless, I find this statement interesting, as when I shed 30 pounds I found myself getting MUCH more chilled much more quickly. If water temp is below 75, I'm wearing my TLS350. A 2 hour dive is not a...

    Do you smoke

Don't buy anymore. Seriously, that is what I did. 20 years of anywhere from 1 to 4 packs a day. I finished the last carton and didn't buy anymore, refused one when offered (tell everyone that you don't smoke)... if they aren't available, you can't smoke them. I kept a tin of Altoids in my...

    Do you smoke

Agreed. Phlegm in the lungs can increase the risk of AGE, but even with reduced lung efficiency, overall cardiovascular health and bodyfat levels are more influential in SAC rate. If anything, smokers have a higher tolerance for CO2.

Are single tanks used for wreck penetration? (+)

I honestly hate to think that, as an instructor, you are presenting this to your students. So you are small with a low SAC rate. What would you do, inside of a wreck, at 150ft, if your 1st stage fails? For that matter, what would you do in open water at 150ft if your 1st stage fails? You...

    Decompression stop for shallow dives?

Even if you do lack the skills to properly operate the wing, or when diving a drysuit, you are under the misunderstanding that DIR divers are always 100% perfectly horizontal at all times while underwater. That is yet another misconception. A SLIGHT tilt to the side, or head down or head...

    Decompression stop for shallow dives?

This is where you're wrong. This presumes a wing that is filled 100% to capacity. It's not, and never is... even surface flotation is more comfortable with it at 50% or so. When the wing is used properly... IE: Not restrained by attachments to the BP, and not overfilled... the sides of the...

    Decompression stop for shallow dives?

What are we trained to do in the event of a runaway ascent? Flare. Get horizontal, spread out, and present as much drag as possible, just like a skydiver. Why not maintain this position to help prevent a runaway ascent from beginning?

House Painters and Remodelers - don't show up in a Lexus

Sooo... don't keep us in suspense... which one gets the BETTER reaction? I bought Camille an '04 Rav4-L for Christmas last year, but it's a little small for running clients to show homes. Should I replace it with an RX330 or a Camry?

    O2 toxicity in deco chamber

Keep in mind that most chambers, IIRC, ALL multiplace chambers, which would include those housing an attendant medic, are pressurized with air while the patient gets his O2 from a mask to reduce the risk of fire. And yes, narcosis is a factor and the attending medic in the chamber does NOT...

    a few DIR questions

Correct. 40 inch, deployed over the left shoudler, behind the neck, and around front from the right, same as the long hose. Keeps the donation procedure identical no matter which bottle you're on, and it keeps the hose off the bottom.

    Rumours and Rumours....

Sport Chalet has been selling a new Norris steel cylinder made at Kaiser/California Steel in Fontana. It's an 80, kinda medium pressure (IIRC, 3000) and does carry a plus rating. It's a beast! When I first saw it and picked it up, I thought it was a Heisler.

    Vytec - extended surface interval

You could just do the next dive... all it does is become a little more conservative, but the warning will be cleared after the next dive (as long as you don't violate it again). The theory is that Suunto uses the RGBM model, which attempts to eliminate bubbles completely, rather than allow...

    Spare Air & Pony Tank

This does bring to mind the proper service for this unit. It's not filled by the dive shop, so there is no industry requirement for a viz, and it's debatable as to whether or not there is a legal requirement for a hydro. Does the manual indicate any recommended routine service? If not, then...

    hog waistbelt configuration

I used one before I started scootering, but only with my wetsuit, and I had no D-rings on it. I looped it through the plate and bolted it in the back with a 1/4-20 stainless bolt and acorn nut with a lock washer and a pair of fender washers. The front was doubled through a non-serrated...

Air leak near pressure gauge - what to do?

Take it back. If it did it on the first dive, it should have gone back then. Good luck on getting it fixed for free after 6 months... warantees rarely cover hoses and O-rings, and some people actually overhaul their regs every 6 months, so the shop will probably tell you that it's due for...
