Question after watching "Openwater" and "USS Indianapolis"

Open water is based on a true story, and that happened in Australia if I'm correct. The sharks in Australia (to my knowledge, limited as it is...) tend to cause more fatal injuries or "consume" the diver. I believe it's because there isn't enough food for them so they eat what they can...

Refunds for Students who Can't pass O/W?

No refund, but where I used to work you got to participate in another class if there was space available for no additional cost. It was a good policy and we would allow you to join another class and go through the skills if you wanted to. Along with that you had the pool to practice in as...

    PADI IDC Key Largo

I used Ocean Divers about eight years ago (?) and they were pretty good. I recommend checking them out since it has been so long since I was there and a lot of things may have changed. http://www.oceandivers.com/ Lot's of fun and great training when I did it though. EDIT: Don't judge...

    Ideas for Emergency Assistance Plan?

I have been in emergency medicine and search & rescue for over 10 years now, so this is a quick tip for you. If there were to be an accident, how would the person be evacuated for treatment? Ambulance, helo, boat, etc. Many dive sites can be accessed by an ambulance but some patients may...

    chest pain while deep

You can pretty much rule out a cardiac problem if the pain changed with respiration like you said. My guess is with the others that it was probably a squeeze, most likely on your fill valve. (was the valve over your sternum?)

    Point Lobos Marine Sanctuary

Want to hear an update about your dive, my guess is you had a great time there. Let us know how it was.

Blunt tip, pointed tip, serated, straigh, sheers...?

We don't call them "penny cutters" for nothing. :)

    safe dive after a flight

It's safe to dive any time AFTER flying, the problem is when you dive BEFORE flying.

    Point Lobos Marine Sanctuary

I forgot to mention that I dove the middle reef there in Whalers Cove, here is a link to some good info for you. http://pt-lobos.parks.state.ca.us/scuba/divespots.html (just click on the map and it will bring up detailed info)

    Point Lobos Marine Sanctuary

I dove it five or six years ago, best diving ever. This is as close to boat diving, without the boat, that you will ever do. The place you park is right next to the water in the cove, you suit up and walk down the ramp into the water. Before you know it you are in 30+ ft of water (it gets...

Do ya like shark fin soup?

I have seen stories about this before, and seen clips on the Discovery channel. They just cut off the fins and throw the sharks back in to die, very cruel.

    Breathe liquid ???

As far as the facial illumination, its for the movie. Same as when you see people driving in cars and there is lots of light coming from under the dash, it's so you can see the actors.

    Am I ready?

I do agree with that, in fact most of my great dives are in about 40ft of water. I am saying that you may find yourself in deeper water than you planned, so it's a good idea to do it with an instructor first, that's all.

    Am I ready?

I recommend that EVERYBODY should take the AOW as soon as possible after the OW cert is done. Why you ask? 1. It gives you more supervised instruction diving without the "skills" that were done in OW class. (mask clearing, etc.) 2. You gain confidence with your own skills with the extra...

    Rock Bottom?

I am not worried about it, but it's much easier to use tank air instead of orally inflating it. In choppy waters (northern ca) it is a PITA to do that once you are at the surface. That was my only point with the bcd. :D

    Rock Bottom?

A static chart like that will not work, too many dynamic variables. You breathe differently depending on exertion levels, anxiety levels, water temp, etc. If you followed that "rock bottom" formula and were about to surface, had a large sea urchin spine go through your hand, I guarantee you...

Diving as a self regulated industry

If you think about it, there are already some government regulations with scuba diving. The DOT is in charge of tanks, USCG is in charge of boats used for diving, state parks requiring dive flags, etc. There is no need for extra "regulation" in this industry.

    Question about Ca Water depths

Click the PDF file near the top of the page, lots of info regarding salinity and depths of the bay. http://sfbay.wr.usgs.gov/access/water/elsevierPDF.html This gives currents and water temperatures, see the graph and click on the red buttons. http://co-ops.nos.noaa.gov/sfports/picsgif.html...
