Hydros...Is this crazy or am I?

The "standard" around here (northwest Ohio) if you take your tank directly to a hydro facility rather than a dive shop is this: it must be emptied and valve removed, they hydro it and you pick it up a couple days later. Period. Cost is about $20 per cylinder. As previously noted, I wouldn't...

I'll be there. I'll have a booth in the exhibit area and I'm presenting in the afternoon.

What's the deal with the "Advanced Nitrox" certification?

TDI standards do not state a specific number of deco bottles a student must carry (except to say that students must carry one and be able to do a gas switch). I have students carry one bottle in Adv. Nitrox/Deco for several reasons. The chief reason is that a second deco gas adds no benefit...

Drysuit Opinions - DUI TLS350 vs. Diving Concepts UltraFlex Pro

I have both the DC suit and a TLS350. I like the DUI much better. It fits better than the DC and seems better made. The pockets on the Diving Concepts suit disintegrated and fell apart after one season (pockets are made from a lightweight nylon). Also had horrible customer service from DC...

James Bruning joins SDI team... expansion continues

Glad to hear the good news Steve. I'm happy to see the agencies evolving and growing. I'm looking forward to finding out what new products you're rolling out at DEMA (don't suppose you'd like to give us a preview?). I'm really pleased to be an instructor with a progressive agency.

What have you found in The St. Clair River?

Lots of old bottles: torpedo bottles, blob tops, medicine bottles. My buddy found several old crocks and a clay jug. I found a clay pipe.

    Gunilda

Too bad, she's about the best steel freighter I've seen. However the Gunilda, being a luxury yacht, is in a class by herself and can certainly hold your attention for more than a few dives!

    Hello from Cleveland, Ohio

Welcome from Toledo! (Look to your west, I'm waving). I do a lot of wreck diving around the Great Lakes. Don't sell local diving short. The Great Lakes are home to some of the best wreck dives in the world. Where else can you find wooden shipwrecks over 100 years old preserved on the bottom...

    TDI cert card costs

Hi Wally, I spoke with TDI HQ the other day and the cards are in the mail to me. I expect to see them within the next few days. As soon as I get them, I'll send them out to you guys (no extra charge ;)

    TDI cert card costs

TDI does not cover cost structure in the standards (nor does any other agency I'm aware of). Business practices are kept out of standards, which usually deal with the instructional/educational aspect of the course. Agencies in general try to stay out of business disputes unless there's some...

    dive boat Seeker

Went out of business. All the creditors lined up to get there money. Last I heard, it's sitting in a boatyard somewhere, unless it's been auctioned by now.

    Gilboa deep side requirements...

Well said Jim. I'm a firm believer in the buddy system AND self-sufficiency. If I can solve a problem myself without using resources from my buddy, so much the better. Save my buddy for "plan C." That's one reason I think a course like SDI's Solo Diver is extremely valuable. It's not that I...

    Gilboa deep side requirements...

Better yet, sit down with Mike and discuss your desire to dive the deep side. Tell him about your background, experience, equipment and ask him how to prepare for diving the deep side. He'll respect your approach and give you exactly the information you need. Too often people just show up...
