Moving to Key Largo, shore diving?

Hi everyone, I am moving from Texas to Key Largo to start a job as staff at a resort, and am looking to find some good shore dives as part of my days off. Is it possible to kayak to dive sites or take small boats? Thanks for the responses in advance, I'm excited to try and find island life!

    Repairing bag lining.

Hey all, I saved a cool old Mares bag from being thrown away and saw the the plastic lining was coming up from the bottom of the bag. I am thinking about just tearing out all of the old lining and replacing it. I am thinking about using a spray-on liner, probably the plasti-dip. Do you guys...

    Gagging problem, need input!

I do this before any dive day, especially on lake weekends when I have to be in the water with students. Drink down a Gatorade and pop a cough drop. I don't have any gagging problems, but the menthol helps keep my E-tubes soothed and less likely to get closed up from the cold air. ----------...

I can't get this dang SPG open.

holy cow, Couv, I have two of those! that's the design that i'm talking about. i will try using channel locks and a vise and see if that works. I don't understand why the manufacturers made the grips so weak, it's frustrating as all get out. i wish they were made more like this: With the grips...

I can't get this dang SPG open.

Yes it does. The clear face part of the SPG housing unscrews so that you can remove the gauge from the housing. Most are older than dirt and stuck closed.

    Tank orientation

Uh, Nemrod, you know that the phoenix nozzle was invented as a way to modernize the aqua-lung right? You got yours through Vintage Double Hose? That's where I got the parts for the DW Stream Air I dive on occasion. No Phoenix, I have a J valve and a wrist mounted depth gauge. The system your...

I can't get this dang SPG open.

Hey everyone, I'm sure this has been asked before, but i cannot for the life of me unscrew the faceplate from one of my SPG's housings. I've tried a strap wrench, soaking it in hot water, and the largest pair of vise grips i own just slip off. The actual gauge is corroded as heck so I am trying...

    Tank orientation

Originally, SCUBA gear was radically different and pretty much required tanks to be valve up when diving. the original recreational setup, the "Aqua-Lung" was a very primitive first stage that had a single corrugated hose attached at two ends of the stage with a mouthpiece in the middle to...

Funniest Diving quotes you have heard

I was doing a student recruitment at my university's bookstore when a guy and his wife came by and revealed that they were divers. The guy claimed he was an instructor also, and we swapped some stories. This one was too much though: Me: So was it you who got your wife hooked" Him: Oh yeah, I...

Does my rig default me as a "Bad Buddy"?

Well, I've seen o-rings explode on their own, but not, that was when a student banged the yoke off trying to swim under something. I could see it happening if the yoke wasn't tight enough and the o-ring extruded. never seen a hose explode from out of the blue, though I have had a hose unscrew on...

Does my rig default me as a "Bad Buddy"?

Most of the things you mention here give warning signs before they fail. LP and HP hoses will bubble from the outer sheath, tank o-rings will not seal completely and bubble when they are getting old and dry. Tanks with stuff that will clog a dip tube will rattle. Pressure gauges will stick if...

How has Rescue Diver helped you?

Does my rig default me as a "Bad Buddy"?

OP, whichever way you go, just be sure to practice it consistently with your GF, especially since she is going to be your buddy. No matter what setup you have, if you practice enough with it then you will be fine. If your SPG is dangling too much for you and you don't want to change hoses, you...

    Diving and Exercise

The DAN article was a little old (2008) I think the others I sent you were newer. There has been plenty of research on recreational diving, But most of it is academic and behind paywalls. That's whay I love looking up diving on my schools library network! OP, your plans look fine, I don't...

Watching Coast Guard Florida : Diver rescued with collapsed lung - Possible Causes?

^ agreed. Is this a TV show? If so then it's not surprise that there's not a lot of information. I think something like 4 feet of water pressure change can injure alveoli, it doesn't take much to get a lung overexpansion injury. Did the sow say if she was smoker? That would increase the risk...
