    Canon G1X

Unfortunately many have seen this coming, given how much the lens extends on the G1x. On the plus side, Canon is rumoured to announce its mirrorless entry very soon (June 2012). (Or you can always look into m4/3 or Sony NEX....) :D

    E-M5 and PT-E08 housing review

Many thanks for the heads-up, Phil. I think many of us have suspected that the E-M5 would make an excellent UW camera, and this review confirms that. Of course, it still does not rival DSLRs in some areas (e.g. continuous AF), which we already know from DPReview's review. However, it's...

    AOW as an experienced diver

You've got it -- people who run courses/centres/agency all have mouths to feed. Anyway, for Nitrox, there are many online courses one can take. Doing Nitrox online doesn't make it any cheaper, but does allow everyone to learn at his/her own pace. In your case, it would have spared...

    Olympus E-M5 off to Mexico

Are you confusing the Canon G1x (1.5" sensor) with the Panasonic GX1 (m4/3)? The Canon G1x most definitely does NOT use a 4/3 (or m4/3) sensor..... :cool2: (Oh, did you mean a 4:3 aspect ratio sensor? The G1x sensor is indeed 4:3 in aspect ratio....)

    Olympus E-M5 off to Mexico

Actually, the G1x is a 1.5" (or 3/2) sensor.... (Source: Canon PowerShot G1 X Review: Digital Photography Review) It's slightly bigger than a m4/3 sensor, and slightly smaller than an APS-C sensor. :)

What I have learned through dive gear purchases

...They tried to make me go to rehab, I said, "No, no, no"... :cool2:

    Olympus E-M5 off to Mexico

Hope they've got enough patience -- it'll be like waiting for Godot.... Or maybe they decided (correctly) their product will not appeal to OM-D owners: - people who are willing to spend $1000 (on the body alone) will not be shy to spend a bit more for an aluminum body - people who want to...

What I have learned through dive gear purchases

Someone (either the LDS or some online vendor) is literally laughing all the way to the bank.... Anyway, what happened to all that gear? Did you sell them on Craigslist or just stockpiled them in the garage/basement, in case your diving preference changes again? So far all of my diving...

    Olympus E-M5 off to Mexico

Thanks! I downloaded #66, but I guess I will have to pay to get #65. :( It's a bit funny how they allow the current issue to be downloaded for free, but charge money for past issues. :hm: Anyway, if #65 is mainly going over the specs and also commenting on on-land use, I can easily...

    Olympus E-M5 off to Mexico

Can't agree with you more. A lot of people have this notion that a camera with an APS-C sensor is automatically better than one with a m4/3 sensor. While the absolute sensor area of APS-C is indeed 20% larger, the difference in IQ attributable to this difference in area is actually quite...

    Descend to Decompress???

Yes, I intend to pick up Deco for Diver at some point. (Deeper into Diving costs quite a bit more, so will have to wait until later....) Having seen lots of rec divers (many with much more diving experience and/or certification levels than me) doing all kinds of "wrong" things, and still...

    Descend to Decompress???

First of all, I want to thank all for the discussion so far. As a still-very-green rec diver, with way too many months of involuntary surface interval to kill until I can dive again, reading Scubaboard daily is not only a coping mechanism for me, but also helps immensely in my effort to become...

    Olympus E-M5 off to Mexico

Maybe he's actually testing the prototype but under NDA.... ;) As for user report on the E-M5, you can find tons of them in land photography forums. I even saw a few in the Canon-specific POTN forums. Of course, I expect Phil will be among the first to comment on the use of E-M5...

    Olympus E-M5 off to Mexico

Not sure if you are referring to the lack of update on the OM-D E-M5 or the lack of updates in general. We are not going to hear much about the UW prowess of the OM-D E-M5 for a few months still, since no UW housing exists for it yet. (The Olympus PT-EP08 has been announced, and there are...

    Accident at Humber Bay, Toronto

Well said. The amount of rubber-necking around any roadside incident suggests most of us have a macabre curiosity, but this should not trump the family's right to some privacy. Having said that, this is the Accidents and Incidents Forum, and as someone who's thinking about taking up...

    Diver lost in Cozumel today

According to her daughter (Krystal Schoonover), he went up to the surface, couldn't see her, and went back down: See her comment following the article: Grandmother feared dead after being sucked away from husband's side in strong currents during scuba dive | Mail Online Of course, this is...

    Concatenated Posts

Why not just limit this "feature" to the classifieds? With another new "feature" (limiting posts to 140 characters) coming, I can only imagine how weird SB might look -- many many near-empty boxes, with still lots of extraneous info on the left (user name, then a line for moderator status...

Buying two of eveything or "stagger"

We started by exploring the possibility of doing our AOW locally before the trip, but quickly gave up -- dive shops around our area only do courses in the summer months. We then contacted Scuba Club Cozumel to see how easy/disruptive it would be to add one or both courses into our 5-dive-day...

Can anyone recommend a point and shoot u/w system?

You beat me to it. I was about to recommend the S100's predecessor, the Canon S95, in order to fit under your $700 budget: S95 is getting harder to find, but about a month ago some vendors were clearing it out at $250-$300. Underwater housing for the S95 will likely go extinct soon, but as of...
