What and where are the scuba olympics?
The event will take place on Saturday April 3rd at the
Orleans Recreational Complex located at 1490 Youville Drive, in Ottawa.
Sign-in will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the lobby, with the event running from
8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. All teams must be registered by Feb. 14, 2004.
There is a $50.00 registration fee per team. $10.00 per team member.

Since this is a charity event, you will be requested to collect pledges for
the Heart and Str*ke Foundation. So, the quicker you can get the teams
registered, the quicker you can get the pledge going.

The Memorial Olympics consist of five events that will take place both above
and below the water. The events are Hurdles, Buddy Race, Darts, Rescue Me,
Word Jumble (using PADI, NAUI, ACUC dive tables), and the most important
event, Pledge collection.

Here is a brief description of last year's events:
Hurdles: In scuba gear, each team member swam the length of the pool,
proceeding through a hoop course. At the end of the course, performed a
scuba skill and swam back to the start to tag the next participant. Fastest
time won.

Weight Lifting: In scuba gear, on bottom of the deep end, the team inflated
enough balloons to raise a 20 lb lead. (Boyle's Law raises it's ugly head
again). Fastest time won.

Buddy Race: In scuba gear, buddy pairs had their legs tied together with an
empty weight belt and fins on the outer legs only. One buddy pair swam the
length of the pool where they removed the weight belt and fastened them to
an awaiting buddy pair. This happened until all team members raced.
Fastest time won.

Speedy Sprint: In scuba gear but without fins, each team member sprinted
(walking or "running" underwater but no swimming allowed) a specified
distance within their swimming lane. Fastest time won.

Survivor: Each team member assembled in the deep end wearing only mask,
snorkel and fins. A complete set of scuba gear was tied with a rope, locked
and placed at the bottom of the pool. A container containing the keys to
the locks was placed at the bottom of the pool. Each team member was
required to retrieve a key to try to unlock the kit. Once unlocked, the
team member would don the equipment and surface. Fastest time won. Oh and
to make things interesting, the container with the keys also contained
marbles.

Word Jumble: On the pool deck, the team received a number of dive profiles.
The team had to determine the ending pressure group for the dives. Using
the letters for the pressure group, unscramble the letters to discover the
mystery phrase.
The phrase was Diving with Heart.

Pledge Total: This counted for the most points out of all of the events.

As you can see, these are well thought out and fun events, all for a very
worthy cause.

Thanks Mark for your report from last year. The word jumble is back (hence the reason for this post), but most of the other events have been changed.

It should be a fun time. The Wet Owls are planning to return to remain the champions, but I have a feeling one or two of the other teams plan to give them a run for the championship.

DivingGal:
The Olympics is a fund raiser a few us here in Ottawa initiated last year in memory of a dear diving buddy who passed on. It's a fun event with different "sports" for the teams to participate in. All monies raise are donated to the Ontario Heart and Str*ke.

Cool thanks.
