Diver harvesting giant clams airlifted to Seattle hospital; companions found him unconscious

BREMERTON, Wash. — A 46-year-old man who had been harvesting giant clams in Kitsap County's Gamble Bay has been airlifted to a Seattle hospital after running into trouble.

KOMO-TV reports the man's companion divers called 911 on Tuesday morning, saying they were performing CPR and rushing to shore with the unconscious man. They said he had been diving 33 feet below the surface.

KOMO says the unidentified man was flown to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

The state Department of Labor and Industries is investigating last month's death of a diver who was employed by the state to collect the giant clams called geoducks (GOO'-ee-duks) for testing. David Scheinost (SHYN'-ohst) died off the south end of Bainbridge Island.
