    Hello,

I'm a relatively new diver and I'm looking to subscribe to a magazine or two. Can anyone recommend some good magazines related to diving?

    Thanks,
    Mike

Scuba Press is a pretty good magazine that comes out 4 times a year. It's made right here in Canada which is as good a reason as any to read it. :)

Gotta agree with this. Dive training magazine is very good.
They don't see to be so "biased" by the advertisers, etc.
    A subscription isn't cheap, I think $26 or $29/year, but you
can get a "free" 6 month subscription card typically from
your dive instructor, since you are a new diver. Otherwise
you can pick them up for free from most dive shops.

Scuba Diving Magazine has some usefull information in it,
but in most people opinion, it could be a lot better.
They seem to do the same stories of the same dive
destinations over and over again on different years.
I guess they can't find anything new to report.
Subscriptions to them can range from $12/year to
$18/year in the little subscription cards that come
in their magazine. In my person opinion, it's not
worth the $18/year. But if you go to Ebay and
search for Scuba Diving Magazine you'll find an
online store named Blue Sky Magazines that sells
magazine subscriptions. They have it for $8.95 for
two years. That's about 40 cents per issue.
So for that price, you can't go wrong as for 40 cents
you can at least use it for bathroom reading material.

Padi Sport Diver is another mag. Sometimes they
have good stories, but they also want $29/year
for a subscription so that you can join their
    "Padi diving society"

Advanced Diver Magazine. I'll pick it up and
read it if a copy is lying around, but they want
$8 bucks a copy at the magazine stand and
$25/year for only 4 issues per year subscription.
*ouch* on that price per issue.

Fathoms also is $30 bucks for 4 issues.

Of course these last two cost a lot more for
a subscription or per issue, but I don't think
they are as controlled by their advertisers
like the formally Rodales (now just Scuba diving)

I also like Dive Training Mag. I also suggest you look on ebay. Sometimes people will sell a few years of old mags from scuba diving and others at a greatly reduced price for used mags. As stated before, they repeat similiar articles every other year or so, thus only the advertisements will be out of date for the most part. This is pretty typical for most "hobby" mags. A two year subscription will lead to you out growing it. I still like to read my old mags though because I do forget stuff. Good Luck!

Dive Training - www.dtmag.com - seems to be the least ad biased I've seen so far that sells for a reasonable price.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, much appreciated. I can probably pick up a copy of Dive Training at my LDS. I will likely try out a few of the above. Gregoire, The NW Dive News looks good as it is focused on local diving.

    Thanks again

Regarding the comment that Scuba Diving magazine is "controlled by advertisers." Between the two magazines I regularly see on the news stand, Scuba Diving ,and Sport Diver, I thought Sport Diver was the one everyone said was heavily biased toward their advertisers ? I agree that Dive Training is really good and I look foreward to each issue. I also read the other two as well.

One of the things that Scuba Diving does is an large "destination" article on some island that diving is big on. Like Cozumel or Bonaire or Grand Cayman. To prove they do this on an advertiser basis, just look in the pages before, in, and after this article and they've sold "extra" ads to businesses on this particular destination that you won't see any other time.

Of course Scuba Diving isn't the only publication that does this. Even you local paper will do things like this. It's very common in the news/magazine publishig business.

In all fairness though, since Rodale's sold Scuba Diving Magazine, they appear to be adding more diving/training articles. It's still heavily ad based, but there seems to be a little more of the value added articles. Who knows, after they get settled into the new ownership, it might be different.
