Diver found dead in Bay of Islands after 15-boat search

Police say the diver's body was found overnight in an 'extensive' search after being reported missing.

A diver has died in a water-related incident in the Far North.

Emergency services responded to reports of a missing diver off Waihihi Bay about 6.40pm on Thursday.

Police found a body in the water just before 2am.

Coastguard New Zealand Regional Manager Jonny Bannister said Coastguard Bay of Islands volunteers took the lead in an extensive search that involved up to 15 private vessels.

The death will be referred to the Coroner.
