Diver rescued after incident off coast of Barnegat Light

A diver who was experiencing medical problems was rescued by a Coast Guard crew and later airlifted to a medical facility following an incident just east of Barnegat Light Sunday.

According to the Coast Guard, watchstanders in Philadelphia were contacted at about 10:45 a.m. by a crew member about the vessel Dina Dee. The Coast Guard said the male victim was involved in a “dive incident” about 8 miles east of Barnegat Light.

In response to the call for help, officials say a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew was dispatched from Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light. When crews arrived, they transported the diver to awaiting EMS personnel at the Barnegat Light Coast Guard station. Officials say he was then airlifted to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia.

“Always paying attention to people around you and being able to recognize signs and symptoms of possible medical problems is very important,” Petty Officer 3rd Class Paul Zimmermann, the coxswain on the MLB, said in a statement. “Luckily we were nearby and able to assist in getting him to proper medical care.”
