COZUMEL, Q. Roo.- The United Nations Organization for Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), by the "program Man and Biosphere" (MAB, for its acronym in English) approved the inclusion of the island of Cozumel in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, according to an official bulletin.

The announcement was finalized during the Fourth Congress of Biosphere Reserves, held in Lima, Peru, from 14 to 17 this month, where the undersecretary of Sustainable Development, Federico Ruiz Piña, presented all work performed under the name: " the City of Cozumel and Biosphere Reserve Cozumel Island . "

"In Quintana Roo had until now 26 protected natural areas of public, of which 82% is under federal custody and 28 percent is under protection by the state," said state governor Roberto Borge Angulo


Ruiz Peña explained that to achieve the registration of Cozumel to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, the Secretariat of State Environment (SEMA), the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) and the representation of Unesco in Mexico , worked for two years in analysis, delimitation, legal scope, zoning and features of the island.

He added that Cozumel at all times had the support and assistance of the director and representative of Unesco in Mexico, Nuria Sanz Gallego, so that this work could be realized.

The announcement that Cozumel is part of the Global Network, is an achievement that will enable the Municipal Government to continue actions to promote the relationship between nature and human beings, besides disseminating the natural values and archaeological that distinguish the island patrimony of Mexicans.

Also it will be allowed to continue driving initiatives edge and world - class , with political will, shaped and driven by a common agenda to design spaces for sustainable development, which allows the construction of public policies that address the challenges, areas of opportunity and challenges.

Cozumel, Quintana Roo third reserve
In its announcement, UNESCO noted that the inclusion of Cozumel to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, Mexico adds 43 territories in this category. In Quintana Roo there are two biosphere reserves, the Sian Ka'an (example of sustainable economic development in the country and the world for 30 years) and the Banco Chinchorro .
