A diver disappears in the Arcachon Bay, search suspended

A diver disappeared this Monday, August 14, 2023 while he was near the Banc d'Arguin, in the Arcachon basin.

On Monday August 14, 2023, a diver aged around forty disappeared in the Arachon Basin (Gironde). It was diving at the southern pass of the Banc d'Arguin , a narrow passage open to navigation which can be particularly choppy .

The disappearance was reported at 5:15 p.m. by the dive support vessel that was transporting him. Significant search resources were quickly deployed to try to find him.

The search methods were not enough to find him.

The Atlantic Regional Operational Surveillance and Rescue Center (CROSS-A) first broadcast a “Mayday Relay” message in order to initiate the search and rescue system.

A boat, a speedboat and a sea rescue RIB were deployed as well as a Dragon 33 helicopter from civil security and a Caracal from the Air Force. A team from the coastal surveillance brigade of the maritime gendarmerie was also on site.

Despite this important device and after several hours, “for lack of new information”, the search was suspended at 10:04 p.m. – as specified by the maritime prefect of the Atlantic.
