Freediving Accident Claims Man’s Life, Difficult Terrain Hinders Rescue Efforts

September 10, 2016 2:22 pm Tom Lemons

WEEKI WACHEE – A diving accident claimed a man’s life this morning, after he was pulled from the swampy waters of the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Area.

Information is still developing but according to our sources a 40-year-old man drowned just before noon today, while free diving in an area behind the Hernando Sportsman’s Club. The area is located off Indigo Lane which is situated on the west side of Commercial Way, across from Thrasher Ave.

Efforts to reach the victim were hindered by narrow roads and swampy terrain. By the time Rescue Personnel reached the victim it was too late. Nearly an hour had passed from the time 911 dispatchers received the call.

Detectives with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating incident.

In the comments section contributors are speculating he was diving with his adult kids at Buford Spring and doing cave penetration on breath hold. I don't know anything about this spring to know if it does in fact have a cave/cavern.
