If I'm not telling you what you already know, closer to home, 3 or 4 hour drive from Austin to Freeport gets you onto a liveaboard boat that goes out to the National Marine Sanctuaries way offshore, the "Texas Caribbean" because the water's clear, and just warm enough to grow coral, on several salt domes that rise up from the 300-400 foot continental shelf, to about 80 feet for us divers. Fling Charters is the main operator as I recall. No frills, great diving, fun trip.
