Luckily I have the old one so I've put it back in and plan to do a dive tomorrow, then will head down the dive shop and have a chat.

Careful!!!! That likely damaged the piston knife edge as well as the retainer. Piston is likely now shot....

I WOULD NOT DIVE IT!
 
Thanks for the advice rhwestfall!! Still a bit sheepish about servicing myself. Worry about pinching orings like the one on the piston shaft that's hard to get to. Or making other simple mistakes. Would need a pressure gauge too I assume?
 
IMHO - A $15 IP gauge (goes on your LPI hose) regardless of servicing yourself or not is really an "essential" tool for monitoring your regulators. What would break my heart would be if that reg really didn't need service [yet], and this happened unnecessarily....
