I am having a hard time deciding this and there is no exact match in the Reef Fish book or the Fishes of the Maldives book either... the tail is forked, fins and tail both black, a smooth gray body, head looks like a humpback snapper... no visible tinges of red anywhere .... ?? Zoom in for a close-up as I could never get close to them when actually shooting...

Thanks!

I'd lean toward humpback snapper, at least snapper, over any emperor.
