With the 2008 diving season rapidly approaching, the Long Island Divers Association has been working very hard to try to make this year a great one for diving. So much has been happening so fast, so we would like to give you all a brief summary.

On February 20th, the membership elected the Board of Officers for 2008 by unanimous vote. They are:

Bill Pfeiffer - President
Randi Eisen - Executive Vice President
Barry Lipsky - Vice President
Karl Kelso - Treasurer
Adam Altman - Secretary

On March 19th, the newly elected Board of Officers for 2008 assumed their posts and presented their initiatives for the upcoming diving season at the March Members Meeting. On hand were representatives from most of Long Island's dive boats, shops and clubs, as well as many local divers and instructors, to discuss the upcoming season. The discussions covered topics that ranged across all diving interests. The officers would like to thank everyone who attended for their time, as well as their ideas and enthusiasm. We will be working very hard in the coming months to take these ideas and act upon them. Complete minutes from the meeting will be made available on the LIDA website.

With the induction of the new Board of Officers for 2008, the end of a 15 year record of official service to LIDA was realized. Janice Raber has been such an integral part of the organization for so long, that it is hard to imagine LIDA without her. Although she has stepped down from her position as an officer, she promises to continue to volunteer when she can. Also stepping down from the board after many years of dedicated service is past President Steve Burke. In recognition of their dedication and service to LIDA, the Board of Officers held a brief Executive Committee Meeting at the beginning of the March Members Meeting, where they voted unanimously to grant them both Honorary Memberships and waive dues in perpetuity. This motion was also extended to include all past LIDA presidents, in recognition of their service. All of the members of LIDA and the diving community in general owe them a debt of gratitude for their dedicated efforts.

The annual consumer diving show "Beneath the Sea" was held this past weekend at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, NJ. Many familiar faces stopped by the LIDA booth to renew both memberships and acquaintances, and to meet with the many new people who joined and expressed their support for LIDA's work. The officers would like to thank all the volunteers who worked so hard to make this show the success it was. We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to Captain Dan Berg, Randi Eisen, Jeff Bachman, Tommy Sorriano, Lee Gorsline, and Bob Auteri, who entrusted us with many of their prized artifacts for display in our booth. We would also like to thank Suzanne and Glenn Rankin for allowing us to show their amazing local dive video: "Colors of the Sea" at the booth. Those who attended the 2007 LIDA Film Festival are sure to remember this spectacular presentation. It easily rivals any tropical presentation, and it was shot completely in the waters of Long Island. Finally, we must thank Bob Auteri, who chaired the BTS Committee, and took responsibility for the preparation and coordination of the show. It's success could not have been achieved without his assistance.

The LIDA Seminar Series kicks off on April 22, with Butch Hendrick of Lifeguard Systems presenting on Public Safety Divers' Safety. The series continues on May 7, where Marine Biologist Marianne McNamara and her team of Marine Biologists and "The Fish Guys" will expose some of the amazing things we never knew about our local Marine Critters. Complete information for both of these seminars will be sent out separately, and is also currently available on the web site at Long Island Divers Association. Please note that RSVP is required to reserve your space and to be advised of any changes to the schedule. LIDA hopes to continue to bring interesting and exciting seminars to the diving community throughout the year, with several additional seminars in the planning stages. We hope you will join us for these entertaining and informative events.

Our first quarter 2008 LIDA Log will be available shortly. This year, we will be moving to an online format. This will allow us to get information to the diving community much more efficiently. We will also be unveiling a completely redesigned web site with a new look and many new features. We hope these changes will help us keep the diving community better informed, and will provide our members with additional services and features to enjoy.

Finally, we wish to remind all of our members, if you have not yet renewed for 2008, please consider doing so. From the web site, you can join or renew online, or print out a membership and renewal form for mailing. Your membership provides the funding for our programs. We are also always looking for your feedback and assistance. If you would like to send us an idea or suggestion, contact information for all the Officers is available on the web site. If you would like to volunteer to help with any of the various programs we run and sponsor, feel free to contact us or join us at our monthly membership meeting. LIDA is staffed completely by volunteers, who are the lifeblood of our efforts.

We appreciate your continued support, and look forward to an exciting 2008 diving season.
