salamat, po. i mean pao. broadcast television in davao (abs/cbn) is showing dead corals and dead fish and said diving is suspended in the vicinity of the grounding while the situation is further evaluated. newspaper reports say ship has been offloaded and salvage crews are on the way. 3 hecates :shakehead: damaged or destroyed, though it is not clear exactly where. "monad shoal" is the best i can come up with for now. so something serious is going on.

There is some terrible, nonsensical and non factual reporting of this whole event by keyboard hacks who have not been here. Here are the facts from someone in Malapascua:

A ship is currently sitting on top of Monad Shoal's shallowest point.
It has damaged the reef considerably.
There are various agencies here discussing what to do next.
As its half moon the tidal change is not much hence why not much is happening.

But . . .

It has not damaged the area near the cleaning stations nor interrupted the Thresher Shark sightings
All diving continues as normal in all dive resorts to all dive sites.
All ferry crossings to Malapascua continue as normal despite what some hacks have printed.

It is likely a legal case will follow so comments here should not prejudice any case but once the ship is removed we hope the typical visitor to Malapascua will never know it happened nor see the damage as it is simply not a specific location we dive.

As of 1012am today June 20th the Belle Rose has been floated and removed from Monad Shoal.

Damage assessment and action still ongoing. But rest assured the sharks are still there and highly active.
