You can pick up a pony bottle gauge for about $15.00 at Piranha. These have a large enough face to read underwater and don't require a hose or spool.

How do you read them when the pony in on your back?

If you have switched to your pony your are on the way to the surface and if you have picked the correct size you will have plenty of gas to reach to reach it.

My preference is to side sling a pony when I use one.
