How is different from taking a CD and looking through the hole at the object you want to target??? You would be able to see the target but the mirror ankle could deflect the sun in all different directions.

You can't really see the reflected spot more than a few hundrew yards away. The mirror with the aiming mesh creates a "ghost image" of the refected spot that you can see through the hole and place on the target.

Also, with the aiming spot, you can hit a target close to one horizon when the sun is near the other horizon.

It's one of those things you have to try to understand, but it's obvious if you have a real signal mirror in your hand and play with it for 15 minutes. My dad was a pilot and had some around that we used to play with when I was a kid. We lived in New Mexico and used to flash morse code at each other.
