Here's an announcement from my friend Sheri.

I am excited to announce a Spearfishing Seminar and Expo, to be held at the IGFA (Fishing Hall of Fame) Museum on Thursday, July 20! It's a beautiful facility located in Dania Beach/Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Although this is being held two days after Nationals, the target audience is not just Nationals contestants, but anyone interested in spearfishing. It is open to all....beginner to advanced, freediver or scuba, and juniors and women are especially welcome. Proceeds are being donated to a charity, the Boca Raton Society for the Disabled.

The morning will be filled with exciting speakers, including Daryl Wong, Kirk Krack, and Art Pinder. They will cover a wide variety of topics, including equipment rigging, picking the right tools for the job, the latest on the science of freediving, safety tips for spearfishers, as well as some stories from the past from the legendary slinger -- Art Pinder. You should find it to be uplifting, informative, even funny at times.

The afternoon will be filled with many vendor exhibits from different dive shops and manufacturers. We will have all kinds of dive gear, including freediving and scuba equipment, and covering reef to bluewater hunting needs. A wide variety of speargun brands will be represented, as well as wetsuits, fins, fish artwork, spearfishing magazines, etc. Many items are being donated for the charity, so there will be a big raffle. Come and enjoy!

Space is limited so register early. For more info, visit http://www.longfins.org/seminarexpo.html

I look forward to meeting Daryl Wong and picking up spearing tips from this master custom gun builder.

Kirk Krack is the utmost authority on freediving training today. His Performance Freediving courses are becoming legendary for taking freedivers to the next level.

Art Pinder's spearfishing stories from as far back as the fifties are riveting and hilarious! Art is a master with a Hawaiian sling and a two time Nationals freediving champion. He and his brothers won over 10 Florida state championships.

The link was working earlier, but now the Longfin's website has many pages not functioning.

Here's their home page http://www.longfins.org/ and the page about the Nationals tournament, http://www.longfins.org/Nationals2006.html which has the link to the Seminar and Expo.

I'm sure Sheri will get it working again soon.

Also here is the IGFA website http://www.igfa.org/ where the Seminar and Expo are being held.

All the links are up and working, and you can sign up for the Seminar and Expo by Pay Pal.

scubamazing,

There are many types of tournaments, and different levels of competitions.

For instance the Nationals is freediving only and teams must be sponsored by a club or council. There are many State tournaments that may be entered by any team, like the FSDA State Freedive Chammpionship on April 21st, in Bayport FL.

Open tournaments like the Spearboard Open and Hell Diver Rodeo for instance, are scuba or freedive competitions. They are also family oriented events with cook-outs in park locations. The weigh-ins are a sight to see! The Spearboard Open has had an Expo for the last two years, and will again this year, with manufacturers, retailers, artists and travel operators exhibiting.

New divers can often place well enough to win a prize worth their entry fee or more, even if they place past 100th or so. There are also many raffles and category prizes where any diver can win for just entering, or win a huge prize for just turning in any tournament/legal fish.

There is no better way to learn the sport, than to join in with more experienced spearfishers.

There are many links to a lot of tournaments on the home page of Spearboard. Doing a search there will pull up even more.

There has been a change to the schedule of this Spearfishing Seminar & Expo.

We have received great response by attendees/exhibitors, but we were asked by many of the Nationals contestants to change it to Thursday, July 20th, as many are flying back home on Friday. For anyone that has signed up already, if you cannot make that date change of one day earlier, we will gladly refund your entry fee. Hope that does not inconvenience anyone! (I just made the date change to the original post.) Even though we made the change to suit the Nationals competitors who are flying in, all locals, freedivers or scuba are very welcome!
