Excerpts from a 12 hour continuous live underwater broadcast from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, a real-time Skype chat with award-winning documentary maker and marine biologist Richard Fitzpatrick and the chance to speak directly with a panel of Great Barrier Reef experts are just some of what’s on the seminar schedule at the Long Beach California Scuba Show.
On Sunday, June 9, from 3-4pm, Tourism & Events Queensland, Qantas Airways & About Australia will host a Great Barrier Reef, Australia seminar for professional divers and marine enthusiasts, who will have the chance to view never-before-seen footage of  “Reef Live” – a 12 hour underwater broadcast which, for the first time, allowed people from all around the world to join a team of expert divers and marine biologists as they explored the wonders and wildlife on the Great Barrier Reef via a Google+ Hangout, broadcast live through YouTube, just the day before.
Tourism and Events Queensland International Director, Kerri Anderson, said anyone who wanted a Great Barrier Reef experience before the dive show could tune into Reef Live on June 6.
“Over a 12 hour period from at 5pm PST (8pm EST) June 6 Reef Live audiences will be able to tune in from around the world via Google + Hangout and interact in real time with divers on the Great Barrier Reef, plus an expert panel,” Ms Anderson said.
“You’ve heard that old saying about being able to talk underwater, well our divers really can and they will be taking and answering questions in real time from an expert panel, and from the general public via Twitter.
“This is the first time anyone has done anything like this and the fact that they will be broadcasting for 24 hours straight will offer a unique insight into the day-to-day lifecycle of the Great Barrier Reef – the world’s largest reef system.
“Any dive enthusiasts in Southern California can then come along the next day to the Long Beach Scuba Show, attend the seminar and speak in person to some Great Barrier Reef experts.”
The one-hour seminar will feature information on the exciting ‘Catlin Seaview Survey’ (the underwater version of Google Earth), keynote Australian speakers, and a GoPro Camera giveaway.
Qantas Airways will feature a limited-time discounted airfare to Brisbane, Australia to be announced on June 8, 2013. Qantas flies non-stop from the US to Australia and is the only airline to fly the A380 to Australia.
