This is a question about the steps at Casino Point dive park.

I was around and diving the park before the steps were constructed. Back in those days we just picked a rock and crawled out to make our exits. No lines, no rules, no problems… although slipping on the green stuff and twisting an ankle was always a concern. The steps are a big improvement for sure, except on days when the park is crowded, it’s low tide, and/or there’s a surge. Any combination of two of those factors can create a frustrating and potentially dangerous traffic jam around the exit side of the steps.

My question is, are there any rules (written or unwritten), points of etiquette, or other considerations, that would prevent a diver from exiting over the rocks when the steps are jammed up? There are just some days when I’m tempted to exit old school style, and avoid any misadventures approaching the crowded steps.

I was told keep right and exiting Divers have the right of way.

No problem using the rocks. I've done it myself when the stairs were jammed (although less frequently if I have my camera). Biggest problems on the stairs are the snorkelers who stand on the lower stairs and don't move (or when they are in super long lines).

People do need to understand that once you get out, you should immediately move up the stairs to the large flat stair and take your fins off there so others can exit.

I started diving the Park in 1981 when rocks were the only option. Great teaching tool too as you taught your student "wash-on/wash-off" (with apologies to Mr. Miyagi). Stairs certainly made it easier but there's no rule that that's the only way you have to go in or out.

I must admit that I get amused when I'm there and it's crowded and I suggest to someone they enter or exit via the rocks . . . and they look at me like I'm crazy. (Usually followed by "How on earth could you possibly do that?")

LaCo 3'Rs Program, Free class(I think still?) 3R’s Starts June 18th | Underwater Unit Basic 101 in and out of the surf skills. Beach or rocks, breath hold gear only, but build that basic skill set. You'll be jumping the point at OML in no time, Haa! Be Safe Out There! Rock entry at the Dive Park anytime, good style points... ;~) Aloha
