Hope you're enjoying the extended weekend . . .

SURF'S UP!!! - Well, a bit today it appears from the looks of the Redondo Pier cam that points towards Vets Park. I know Buck and others were out Saturday at Vets and it seemed fine. Just goes to show how things can change in 24 hours. Also looks like the swell is up a tad and the period is very short which can make for a slap/slap/slap ride when crossing the channel on one of the dive boats. Doesn't mean you can't find places to dive, just means you may get banged around a little to get there. Not the end of the world.

ISLA MUJERES STUFF - If you didn't see the e-mail earlier in the week, the Isla Mujeres trip report and slideshow are up and running. We had about 18,000 photo views since they were posted last week. If you didn't get a chance to get around to them yet, here again are the links: TRIP REPORT - Isla Mujeres 2016 trip report ; SMUGMUG SLIDE SHOW (click the PLAY button) - Isla Mujeres 2016 trip report .

LOCAL TRIPS ARE BACK - Either by popular demand or simply tremendous guilt on my part, I've scheduled some local dives for September and October. In September, we've got a daytime dive on 9/17 at Vets Park in Redondo which usually means meeting around 9AM, in the water by 10, and packed up and leaving no later than Noon. It's an escorted dive but also a good chance to refresh your beach diving skills and we can even add in some simple navigation tricks if you like. On 9/28, we'll do one of our night dives which involves an 7PM start (although sometimes we shoot for as early as 6PM depending on people's skeds) which puts us in the water by 8 and completed by 10PM. This might be too early for squid but we should get some Target Shrimp and there are always interesting creatures to be found down in Redondo Canyon. On 10/22 we'll head over to Avalon on the Catalina Express out of San Pedro for three dives in the Avalon Underwater Park and a break for lunch in between. We've been seeing Giant Sea Bass (aka Black Sea Bass) there over the summer and hopefully they'll still be hanging around. This one includes the ferry, taxi, tank rentals (but you need to bring weights or rent them), and escorts on all three dives. And then on 10/26, we'll do another night dive at Vets. There won't be anything scheduled for November because we're away on the Maldives trip November 2-18 (and then Thanksgiving is the following week). So if you want to get in some local dives with us - and note that three of the four are freebies - hopefully you'll join us in either September &/or October.

GREAT WHITE SHARK NURSERY - I mentioned in the September newsletter about the discovery of a Great White Shark nursery in the Atlantic which is generating excitement, and I promised you some links. Well here they are and there are two video links in there as well: Great White Shark Nursery Found South of Cape Cod.

A FISH CALLED OBAMA - Last month, President Obama expanded the NW Hawaiian Island Marine Monument, quadrupling it in size and making it the largest MPA (Marine Protected Area) in the world. He also last week visited Midway Island, which is contained in the reserve. He has now been thanked for that effort by having a fish named after him. They're still working on finalizing the scientific name but it will have some derivation of "Obama" in it. He was told about this by Dr. Sylvia Earle during his Midway visit and you can see a video clip of that as well. The newer-discovered swimmer may be the only endemic fish to the new protected area. It's in the genus Tosanoides (Sea basses & Groupers) and will be only the third species in that genus. Here's a link to the article and video. Cute-looking fish, too: Scientists To Name Tiny, Newly Discovered Fish After Obama.

And that'll do it for now. Have a great week and let's go diving soon!!!!

- Ken
