Divers rescued near Anacapa Island
Two divers who came to the surface unresponsive were rescued Saturday morning off Anacapa Island in a joint effort between the Ventura County Fire Department and Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard got a call about 10 a.m. from an 85-foot commercial diving vessel near Anacapa Island that a 40-year-old woman was unresponsive and foaming at the mouth and that a 40-year-old man was also unresponsive and had bloodshot eyes, officials said.

The Coast Guard sent a vessel to rescue the divers. An air squad with the Ventura County Fire Department lifted the divers from the rescue vessel, according to officials.

Both divers were taken to St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, officials said. Their conditions were not immediately known.

The boat must be the Spectre as that is the only 85ft boat going there all the time.

As far as I know they both were conscious and alert when airlifted. They were both unconscious and on O² while waiting for Coast Guards and were conscious later. Don't have the whole picture.

I was there. 2 students (not mine) paniced and blew to surface. Both conscious when air lifted. Bouncy waves, kelp, 10 ft vis. No current.

Students at Anacapa? Is that normal? I would think more Catalina harbor time first.

Anacapa and Catalina are both very common student destinations; boats like the Spectre are typically half full of students.

Its been ages but I think the first OW dives are still beach. But after that, a boat dive is pretty common. Back in the day we were in Monterey Bay on Saturday. Sunday we were on a boat to Carmel. When we got back our instructor signed our paperwork.
