ASHEVILLE, N.C. A woman stayed alive in an air pocket in her overturned, submerged car until rescuers reached her late Sunday, according to the Asheville Fire Department.
Dispatchers got calls from people reporting that a car had gone into the French Broad River near Lyman Street late Sunday night, and the driver had not gotten out.
When they arrived, rescuers found the car upside down in about four feet of water, but they didnt know if anyone was inside.
Several firefighters went down the steep bank to try to see if anyone was in the car while another crew set up a rigging system to help bring any survivors out of the river.
When more equipment arrived, divers went underwater and found Rhonda Williams, who was able to stay alive in a small pocket of air in her car.
Williams was taken out of the car and put in a rescue basket, which was lifted up the steep embankment to Lyman Street.
She was taken to Mission Hospitals with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.
