I was diving at casino point in Catalina this weekend, about to do my last dive Sunday when someone needed help. Coast guard came and rescued an unconscious man in the water. Does anyone know if he is ok and what happened? He has been in my prayers.

I was out on the dive boat filming with the crew from Japan so I didn't hear anything about this. Did see a Coast Guard helicopter come in although it would be rather unusual for the Coast Guard to effect a rescue and transport instead of our local lifeguards/paramedics.

I was out of line to post this. Some of the information was mis-remembered by me and I apologize for those who I may have hurt.

That's very sad.
My husband had a student go into cardiac arrest during an OW class at Casino Point years ago. He was a DM candidate at the time. In fact, I think it was his first OW class that he helped with.
I think the cold water and heavier exposure gear can be a little harder for anybody with cardiac issues, especially students just starting out. Many don't realize how stressful SCUBA can be and may have undiagnosed cardiac issues. The student in my husband's class lied about his high blood pressure and high cholesterol on his medical clearance.

Cant wait for Ken Kurtis take on this. He always has the true reports....Ken?

Is there a site that keeps a running toll of recreational diver deaths and the cause? SB users do a great job in reporting fatalities but I'd like to see a up-to-date running toll for the year. I've thought about making one myself but I'd like to see what's available first.

This is the second death on the West Coast this year (that I know about) that involved a rapid ascent from an AOW deep dive. I really think we may be teaching this too early!

H110Hawk:
The diver unfortunately did not make it. He signaled up at 100ft calmly but persistently while doing his PADI AOW cert. He buddied with a DM and went up. DM reported that the diver began an extremely rapid ascent and was unable to be slowed, eventually pulling himself hand over hand on the chain they were down via.

It may be too early or it may be too deep too soon. Just because you can take an AOW student to 100 feet doesn't mean you should.
