Sounds like a training dive, as an Instructor was part of the group - but the news story doesn't make it clear?

The news article does mention a "fatal accident a week ago," but it was reported on this thread http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/ac...3223-hood-canal-diver-rescued-washington.html that she survived. More casual news work I suppose.

Scuba diver dies in Hood Canal accident
A scuba diver died during a dive on Hood Canal on Sunday.
The incident occurred in the same general area as a fatal accident a week ago, the Mason County Sheriff's Office said.
The Sheriff's Office and medics were called to a report of an unresponsive diver in Hoodsport. CPR was unsuccessful.
The Sheriff's Office said the Oregon man in his 50s was part of a dive group and was with an instructor.

The news report is in error ... the accident the previous week was not fatal. There's a thread on it in here, and someone known to the woman involved posted about what happened and the outcome.

Ok, so it was a training dive - for basic Open Water certification. Unfortunate...

Indeed ... this particular dive site is very popular for classes, due to a general lack of current ...
