Diver in a critical condition after incident at Umhlanga | eNCA
JOHANNESBURG - A Durban diver is in a critical condition in hospital when she stopped breathing after surfacing from an 18 meter dive.
Lifeguards at 'Grannies Pool' in Umhlanga had to perform CPR on the diver when she became unresponsive after reaching the surface.
Netcare 911 said they received the emergency call at around 10h00 CAT on Sunday morning.
In a media statement, Netcare 911 said the diver had "surfaced after doing decompression stops and when she got to the surface she stopped breathing."
It's not certain why this happened, and the cause of the incident is still under investigation.
“The advanced life support paramedics placed the lady on a ventilator and continued with resuscitation. After extensive effort medics managed to regain the patients heartbeat," the statement read.
“After the patient was stabilised at the beach they transported her to a local Umhlanga hospital for the care that she required.”
