A 32-year-old Wisconsin man died after being pulled from waters off Haena Beach Park on Kauai on Friday.
According to the Kauai Fire Department, Chester Stoda of Black River Falls, Wis., scuba diving with a friend near Tunnels Beach.
Lifeguard John Cammak watched the pair as they dove and resurfaced from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m., when Stodas partner returned to the beach. Stoda remained in the water to snorkel, Cammak told authorities.
Cammak said that before he closed his station at 5 p.m., he swam out to check on Stoda and found him unconscious about 50 yards offshore.
Cammak and fire department personnel administered CPR until an ambulance arrived shortly after 5:30 p.m.
Stoda was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.
Stoda was an Army corporal and combat engineer assigned to the 937th Engineering Company, based in Fort Hood, Texas, according to his Facebook page.
