A SCUBA diver drowned at Binalong Bay yesterday despite holiday makers' attempts to revive him. The diver was pulled from the water near Skeleton Bay on to a rock shelf by an onlooker who saw the man in trouble about 1pm.Two people performed CPR for 20 minutes until two police officers arrived and swam out to the rock shelf to help.Two Ambulance Tasmania paramedics took over the CPR for a long time but the man died at the scene.Police have started an investigation for the coroner.Many people were present during the tragedy and witnesses are asked to contact St Helens Marine Police and provide details of their observations to assist the investigation.

Apparently the conditions turned quite quiclky and 2m swells started to roll through. At this location this kind of swell would have created 'washing machine' conditions. The victim's partner began to panic and the victim got his buddy to relax, clear her reg and inflate her BCD to swim to shore. When she arrive at the shore she realised that the victim was no longer with her. A couple of witnesses pulled him from the water and began CPR which was continued by police and paramedics.
Latest information is that cause of death is given as drowning after receiving head injury. So he was bounced against the rocks, knocked out or dazed and drowned as a result.
