Fatality at Wacissa River Big Blue cave - Florida

[UPDATE] Diver Missing in the Wacissa River
    Jefferson County, FL -- July 21, 2012 5:45 PM
Authorities have located the body of a Tallahassee diver in the Wacissa River. Authorities say 30 year-old J. Joshua Cox and a friend went diving in the Big Blue, a popular area for divers. The two found an entrance to a cavern. The water then became murky. Cox and the other diver went to resurface. When Cox did not, the other diver alerted the authorities. JCSO responded, along with the LCSO Dive team. Authorities will not be able to retrieve Cox's body until Sunday morning.

Big blue is an underwater cave. Search crews have been on this rescue mission since about 2pm. Family members are on the scene speaking with officials so they are asking us to stay back at the moment.

The search is on for a diver who went missing in the Wacissa River.
Jefferson County Sheriff David Hobbs says the person went diving in the Big Blue - an area popular for divers in the river.
Officials received the call around 12:28 pm about the missing person.
JCSO responded along with the Leon County Sheriff's Office Dive team.
They aren't releasing the name of the person, but still believe there is hope to find them alive.
You can test the tanks you breathe or - dive on hope.
    Testing is safer...

Great news for vacation divers who cannot talk themselves into buying a personal CO tank tester!

Yeah it's just the air we breath - at depth!

Another..... This year is not turning out to be a good one for the cave diving commmunity. Whether or not any of the victims were cave certified or not, it still affects the entire diving community.

They entered an overhead without a guideline evidently and with the murkiness, lost sight of visible light. Even if he had stopped where he could still see visible light, it possible that his buddies may have churned it up on their exit and caused him to become helplessly lost. Not trying to speculate but a tradjety that others may be able to learn from and I feel for the family and friends left behind.

J Joshua Cox is the OW divers name, not cave certified.

UPDATE: Body of missing diver found in Jefferson County - WTXL ABC 27

The body should be extricated by the end of the day. There's less than 200' of cave there.

Sad. Too young to go. A death too easily avoided.

These guys had one hell of a day. OW divers reading this take note. You are not trained to handle any overhead diving. Everytime we have to go after a body its more dangerous for us. So for your family and ours, dont do it.
