Myakka River State Park - Deep Hole 2012 Expedition
The ADM Foundation, along with Sarasota County, and the Florida State park service has joined teams in an attempt to learn more about this karst feature. Due to logistical considerations and threatening wild life conditions, we are currently using side scan sonar units and ROV cameras. BUT an "alligator cage" is being constructed.
Interesting. I recently visited Myakka for the first time in about 30-40 years. Wasn't aware of this, but definitely see the need for an alligator cage!
I came across the biggest alligator I have ever seen in Myakka about 6 or 7 years ago, in one of the tributaries running into the big lake. I know it sounds like a tall tale, but it must have been at least 15 feet long. I am foolishly casual about gators, but this one froze me in my tracks and had me walking backwards very quietly. About a year later some guy jumped into the lake to cool off while bass fishing, and never came up. They found most of him in a giant alligator. I remember the newspaper quoting his mom as saying that he must have dropped his knife because otherwise he would surely have killed the gator. Myakka is a beautiful place. When I visit friends in Sarasota I always spend time there and at Oscar Scherer park. Fantastic places. If you wander around Myakka you need to be aware of the heavy and fearless alligator population. Watching that video convinced me to make plans for this May or June.
