Lack of proper safeguards means that if a real problem occurred at that depth with an Al80, one or both of them would have been screwed. They were trying to cause a real problem with the sound-making (by attracting the shark), which is even dumber than I initially thought.
This is just begging for another "...shark infested waters..." article about what a tragic end these two expert divers, who were obviously minding their own business, met.
