I'm a San Diego Diver and I wanted to know what the diving is like around Boston. Are there many shore dive spots? What kind of underwater terrain can I expect? Visibility? Temp? Depths? Wrecks?

If anyone has dive reports with underwater pictures of some dives they've done in the Boston area I'd appreciate a link to them.

Thanks!
Paul

It's cold. I moved to New Hampshire (I'm about an hour north of Boston) from Texas in part because I dislike the heat and love snow, but man! The water around here is wicked cold!

Visibility?

Visibility is primarily impaired by frozen eyeballs.

At the moment, mid-June, it's about 50F outside. The high 2 days ago was 48F. The water in the pond down the street is too cold to snorkel in at 7-8 foot depths without exposure protection. I'd want at least a 5mm. Frankly, I'm way too scared to dive in the ocean, even at the height of summer, until I get a dry suit or 7mm.

Seriously, though, you could check out http://www.udnh.org/ which is NH-based but has a fair amount of stuff pertaining to our neighbors to the south and east. After all, we only have about 17 miles of Atlantic coast.

Hello from Boston. Boston diving is great. Currently the temps are a bit on the low side. 46F. at depth. Viz is never predictable. On a good day it can be 20'. On a bad day zero. The earlier in the season the better the viz seems to be. We have some interesting wrecks and plenty of marine life. No pretty fish here, but plenty of lobster. If you are ever out this way look us up at bostondiverservices.com. Capt. Pat Breen

I've only been up to the boston area twice thus far. Both times were a new experience and the water was a bit chilly. The first was in October where the water temp was about 55 at surface and about 52 at 20 feet. second i was in a dry suit so i didnt much pay attention to the temp and that was in may this year. plenty of different things to see and just take in. Here's a site that i use quiet often to plan some shore dives http://www.scuba-newengland.com/DiveSites.asp
enjoy

Water temp today was 48 degrees at around 24 feet in the ocean. A 7mm wetsuit kept me in good comfort though....check out the MWDC (metrowest dive club) they are a large boston club.

Nice Matt, that video was great in illustrating the terrain which exists out there. Looks like fun and the vis seems pretty good, although from what I have been hearing the visibility is typically less.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Here's a quick video clip that should give you an idea what shore dives around here are like on a good day. We don't have tropicals, but there are some cool looking fish up here... sea ravens, skates, pout, etc.

Matt, nice video. Where did you record that?
