I currently have a small OMS reel and am pretty happy with it. I am looking for a larger primary reel and am most likely considering another OMS. Can anyone suggest another brand and why?
Thanks

I recently bought a Manta Sr. ITs a damn nice reel...well constructed, won't overspin due to the tension and the indents. The downside is that its god awful expensive. I bought mine used for $75. A LDS has one on the wall for $190!!

I have and use a Dive-Rite primary (http://www.diverite.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=RE4300). There's nothing special about it to recommend it over any other, but I can say "It works for me."

I use Ralph Hood reels (under water connection). I like the Jasper handle myself.

Scroll to bottom of page for Jasper handle.

I have the Halcyon Pathfinder 400 (http://www.halcyon.net/guideline/index.shtml). I've only played with reels on the surface but the design seems very nice to me and it's much harder to foul up on land.. I imagine that carries underwater as well. Very nice reel.

Another vote for dive rite reels. I have and use a primary and a safety reel from them. Simple design, but effective and zero complaints here.

I have a Manta Jr and a Manta Sr. Best reel I've used. I have used others and switched over to Manta mainly for the construction, quality and it's features. I have yet to tangle it. On my other reels I had a cracked spool and broken knob. Give them a look, good luck

another dive rite here.
i have two and no complaints other than i lost my one of my lock screws.. DOH!You can buy the lock screws for really cheap from any dive rite dealer. I know diveriteexpress sells them on their webpage for $1.05. I have thought about just buying a butterfly bolt for a replacement.

It dose not make sense to me to have to buy replacement parts for something with the anticipation of loosing it! It’s not a dig against you, I know your trying to be proactive, but I would rather buy something and spend a little more, but get something built right.

Just my thoughts

Built rightly or wrongly almost anything will need spare parts. With your logic, one would never need spare "O" rings. Right?

Has anyone here used a Trident reel? If so, what are your thoughts about it?

I agree, it's not a dig on you. I carry the spare "o" rings and other usual repair equipment in my box, it's just when I buy certain equipment, I look at failure points. Even thought a DR reels works, I hear and have heard so many complaints with quality and things breaking, why buy it. Don't get me wrong, I like DR equipment and I have a NITEK 3 which I love.

My reels have been in use for a while and they function and work as good as the day I bought it. It's like task loading, If I could avoid having to worry about something, I do . ESPECIALY a reel. With so many other things to prepare for the last thing I need to worry about is a cracked spool, lost knob, etc. It's like fin straps, why bother with rubber ones, I have a set on Manta Springs for my jScubaPro jets. The last thing I want to worry about with all my gear on is a broken fin strap.

I agree. Buy the best quality one can afford.

well ive had a dive rite reel for two years now and this past weekend i lost a screw on one of them. i was no big deal....i didnt even notice it til the end of the dive when i went to lock it down and clip it back on my rig before my accent.
i consider myself hard on hear. not abusive. just hard on it// and this is the only issue ive has with the DR real.. im not saying its the best real, i personall have never used anyone elses.. so.. i have no comparrison....
but the DR has been good to me.. so much i have two of them

I do't like to bash equipment, but I WOULD not recomend it. If you plan on relying on your reel, that is NOT the one to get. I have seen them break too often.

I don't think you're bashing it. I appreciate your feedback. The downside, I just bought one from a guy on ebay. The upside, it was pretty cheap (no doubt for a reason). Oh well, live and learn. I think what I really need is a spool.

After poking around in the LDS awhile, I bought another, larger oms reel. I was pretty happy with the smaller one so I fugured, why not. Thanks for the input.
