help with Suicide clips

I know what they are, but why are they called suicide clips?

Due to the design of the clip it is VERY easy for it to trap any line that it comes in contact with, depending where the clip is attached it may be quite difficult to undo the snag causing an accident that the diver chose to make possible.. Hence suicide clip....

When wreck diving they can, and have, caused entanglement leading to diver death by grabbing wires, cables, line, netting, etc.

...which is a perfectly viable way to attach things to D-rings on your rig. Suicide clips use a spring gated clip that can latch onto things without diver intervention...big no-no on wreck dives.

Look around for info on John Ormsby's death on the Andrea Doria...that was generally attributed to suicide clips on his weightbelt.
