Who is confused - me or the Remora?

The yellow jack was 8" - 10" long --- it was just a baby remora.
 
That's actually a sharksucker (Echeneis neucratoides), not a remora (Remora remora).

What distinguishes the two? People around here use the term sharksucker as a common name for anything that looks like this and wants to cling to someone :D.

Remoras are dark brown or gray all over. Sharksuckers have white stripes.
