After reading a post mentioning RGBM (http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=112710) decompression theory, I got interested. I have found many interesting explanations on RGBM theory and the use of the so called "deep stops"(1/2 max depth for 1min + 2min at 5m) in a recreational diving profile.

Now, I completed my NAUI certification only a few months ago and was given a paper dive table with (c) 1989 printed at the bottom!! A little out of date, maybe? In my readings of RGBM, I found that NAUI had adopted the algorithm and had developed recreational tables based on the RGBM algorithm incorporating Haldane stops. This happened over three years ago (http://naui.com/News/nauinews2002.htm#Menu) ...and my NAUI text (copyrighted 2004) mentions nothing of these deep stops. What did I miss?

Has anybody had experience with the new tables? What are the differences? Where can I view sample tables? Finally... is it safe to use the older tables with a deep stop and safety stop?

thanks! :14:

aside/I'm an engineering physics student, decompression theory is quite interesting...any good, pure mathematical sites I can sink my teeth into?

I just pulled out my NAUI table, it too says 1989 at the bottom. These are safe to dive on. If I rember correctly the Naui tables are based on the Navy tables with a 10% (?) margin of saftey added. I am sure that your instructor told you that if it is an extra cold dive, strenous dive, or anything other than a text book dive to round up to a deeper dive for your calculations to give yourself even more safety. This is all your doing by adding a deep stop. Absolutely nothing wrong with adding an extra stop to off gas! I dont have the sites readily available but do a goodle on deco, RGBM, and some of the other theories. I know there are pages out there that are very scientific. Look up V planner I believe they also gointo the theory... hth

As David P mentioned the NAUI Dive tables are based on the Navy tables, thus the older date. The RGBM tables can be purchased from a NAUI affiliate. You can get the whole set or order the sea level to 2000 ft MSL table. They are extremely easy to use and are conservative.
The RGBM recreational tables were not developed until after the current printing of the Scuba Diver text, although the new NAUI Nitrox text has the RGBM table(s)explanation included. NAUI instructors can purchase an update from NAUI to get the Scuba Diver course instructor guide information for RGBM. As NAUI upgrades their texts, RGBM will be included.
Hope this helps!

excellent, thanks!

You can order the NAUI RGBM Deco Tables Manual but it's costly $100+. Another alternative would be to buy software for your PocketPC PDA or computer at:

http://www.gap-software.com/

Of course, you could also go straight to the source and get the tables from Wienke's site:
