Hi!

I'm new to diving, certified Labor Day weekend in San Carlos. Only regret is that I didn't get started when I was a kid!

Looking for a dive club in the Phoenix area. Moved to the area from Vermont a year ago. Exchanged one weather extreme for another -- and never have to shovel sunshine!

I'd like to stop by your monthly gathering and say, "Hi!"

See you soon!

Well, there's our group - AZScuba: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/azscuba/ We meet the 2nd Weds. or Thurs. of every month, usually somewhere on the eastside. Announcements sometimes get posted here. We're also responsible for this forum as our leader had it created last year.

Ocean Planet Scuba in Tempe has a BBQ the second Friday night of every month. http://www.oceanplanetscuba.com/club.htm

Scuba Sciences in NW Phoenix has a dive club: http://www.scubasciences.com/club_meetings.htm

Also El Mar in Mesa has a "Scuba Social" monthly at the Monastery(bar) in Mesa. 2nd Sunday of the month at 5pm. http://www.elmar.com/monthly.html - I haven't been to it yet, but plan to when it's cooler.

Welcome to the 'Board, Brad. And welcome to the world of scuba.

I'm down in Tucson, and can't comment on any of the groups Steve mentions. But we head up to Phoenix at least once a month (if I'm not away somewhere else) to dive one of the area lakes (usually Lake Pleasant). If you'd like to join us sometime, let me know. We'll be down in Mexico a couple times in October, but plan on diving and camping Lake Pleasant a couple times in November. I'll be posting the dates in this forum and on my website about mid October for those interested. Tentatively, we're looking at Nov 1-2, possibly Oct 31, and Nov 17-19. Meet us after work for a dusk dive, or better yet, a night dive. I'm also planning on being at one of the Phoenix area lakes every 2nd weekend beginning in January. It's just an idea we got to try to get more people involved in diving locally. It's not the best diving in the world, but it keeps your skills up, and actually improves them because of the conditions. Hope to see you there!

Welcome Brad to Arizona and Scuba!!!! I my self have recently taken up SCUBA.

This board has been a great place to connect with people around the valley.

I am free to dive most anytime, so if you want to check out the local scene, drop me a PM.

Hi! I'm in Vermont for a few days. Was hoping to do some wreck diving but the local dive group had difficulty getting a group together so late in the season.

VERMONT?? Don't laugh. Lake Champlain is more than 120 miles long and 400+ feet deep. The Lake boasts over 200 confirmed wrecks (less than a dozen seem dive-worthy) with much underwater archeological exploration still needed.

I visited the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum yesterday. 'Saw displays and videos of current and past underwater archeological work. Current work includes exploration of several square miles off Valcour Island, scene of a naval engagement in 1776 (back in the days when Benedict Arnold was on the right side). 'Last gunboat in Arnold's fleet was not discovered until 1997 in over 180 feet of water, upright, with the mast standing in place and almost fully intact! (In the Revolutionary War and later in the War of 1812, Lake Champlain was a strategic waterway linking the Hudson Valley and Quebec).

There are also wrecks from the War of 1812 and many civilian working boats (barges, paddlewheelers etc) from throughout the 19th centure. Very few have overhead diving challenges. So we mere mortals (Open Water certified divers) can still have some fun!

Artifacts from those wrecks that have been discovered in recent years now appear in the Maritime Museum. Wreck divers are encouraged to visit the Museum before/after they dive, for obvious reasons. The Museum has a preservation lab/workshop that is open to the public.

And by the way, Lake Champlain also has some interesting animal life that divers may be lucky enough to observe. Not that anyone will believe you... http://www.trueauthority.com/cryptozoology/champ.htm

WAY COOL!!

Thanks Steve, Rob, The Mouse!
I think I need to check out all of these groups! I had no idea that there was so much going on in AZ!

Oh...there's more. In what part of the valley are you located?

Welcome!

Hi Stephen.

Thanks for the welcome! I live in downtown Scottsdale near Old Town.

Brad

Our shop is a wee bit far from you...but we have friends from all over the valley.

We don't do a lot of local diving but we do KILLER travel.

On second thought, we do have a group that dives Lake Pleasant on Thursday nights...but be warned...they're...well...they're just plain crazy!

Crazy, eh Stephen?

We'll be out at Vista Point on Thursday the 6th around 7P. If you need directions, send me a private message.
